York slimmers Jane and Jim Bovingdon shed 15 stone

Jim and Jane Bovingdon, of Clifton, York, who have shed more than 15 stone between them Jim and Jane Bovingdon, of Clifton, York, who have shed more than 15 stone between them

A SUPERMARKET worker who needed a special chair at work because of her size is today celebrating – after she and her husband lost 15 stone between them.

At her heaviest, Jane Bovingdon weighed 27 stone four pounds in February last year, wore size 38 clothes, and struggled to bend down to paint her toenails.

Jane said it was a habit of eating fatty foods and a love of takeaways that led her to pile on the pounds alongside husband Jim, who last year tipped the scales at 21 stone.

Today Jane, 41, has dropped nine-and-a-half stone and five dress sizes while Jim, 44, has shed more than five stone and 14 inches from his waistline after the couple, of Clifton, embraced a healthier and more active lifestyle.

Jane says, despite wanting to lose another six stone, she feels like she has a “new lease of life” and feels healthier than ever before.

The turning point came in February last year when, as a store worker at Morrison’s, in Foss Islands Road, Jane began to stop taking her shift and lunch breaks to avoid the staff room because she could not squeeze her larger frame into the small canteen chairs.

“They had to have a special chair made for me,” she said. “I began not taking a break because I was too embarrassed for other people to see me eat.”

Jane, bolstered by support from Jim, began weekly classes at the Tang Hall Slimming World Group, which she says have turned her life around.

“I had done diets before, but it was always the way that I lost one stone then gained two – nothing worked for me,” she said.

“But this time I was really spurred on – especially when I lost the first, then second, then third stone. It was really encouraging.”

Jane said she had obstacles to overcome along the way, including a hysterectomy after she had suspected cancer of the womb, and the death of her mother, aged only 59, last year.

“She was a big lady,” Jane said. “I could see the way my life was going to turn out if I did not do something to change it. It just spurred me on even more.”

Jane embraced a new fit way of life – starting Zumba classes and playing on her Wii Fit.

She credits her weight loss to meticulously planning every meal in advance and not eating anything “spontaneously”.

Jane said a typical breakfast for her and Jim before would include buttered toast and biscuits, lunch time would be crisps and sandwiches and an evening meal would typically be a takeaway.

The weight loss has also seen Jim turn his life around. He said he could not find trousers to fit him when he was at his biggest.

Jane said: “I feel like a new woman. I feel fantastic. I can shop in high street stores for the first time.”

How the couple lost all that weight

Before

•Jane weighed 27 stone and four pounds and wore a 38 dress size.

•Jim weighed 21 stone and three and a half pounds and had a 50-inch waistline.

•The couple would eat sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and shared a love of takeaways.

After

•Jane now weighs 17 stone eight pounds and wears a size 18/20 dress size.

•Jim weighs 15 stone eight pounds and has a 36 inch waistline.

•They both eat pre-planned healthier food such as scrambled eggs, salads and snack on yoghurts and fruit.

The Press - Comment

The big losers

OCCASIONALLY, it takes just one little thing to motivate us into something we’ve let slip. Or in the case of Jane Bovingdon, one large thing: her chair.

Jane was so fed of having to squeeze into a specially made seat at work that she vowed to lose some weight. And her husband, Jim, decided to join her in a new healthier, active lifestyle which today has helped them shed 15 stones between them.

Jane says it means she can finally shop in High Street stores, Jim can at last find a pair of trouser that fit, and the couple tell us today they have never felt better.

They believe their success story is down to meticulously planning every meal, but we think they sell themselves short. It must have been as much down to will power and dogged determination because such a radical change of lifestyle is far from easy.

We salute their achievement.

QUOTE>>>>>>>>We salute their achievement. What do you think ??.I think they should not have got to that weight in the first place and the damage has already been done and they will probably need NHS surgery at the taxpayers expense to get rid of the massive amount of loose skin that will not go back to its original size.Any body can eat themselves fat but most people have the discipline not to do it and it must affect there work as they will be always tired.

It would be quiet easy to say well done instead of criticizing.Well done, at least you did something about your weight problem.

At 13 stone and 5` 11" I don't quite think I am over weight !!! .I am not criticizing but it takes years to get to that weight and along the way when you are out of breath and cannot walk well you should read your body signs.

I've known Jane since Primary School and do remember that she was never as tall as me, although she was 'bigger'. I'm a little bit older than Jane, so although we were friendly at school, we lost touch eventually. We got in touch again earlier this year via Facebook and I was delighted for her that she was in a happy marriage and was determined to lose weight. I've cried for her both in sadness and happiness at events in her life lately. She is a lovely person, a typical North East lass, with a heart of gold and I am absolutely delighted at her massive achievement. And so proud of her. Her and Jim make a lovely couple and I wish them every happiness possible.

We must remember that until we walk in others' shoes we must not criticise. I know the couple very well and it has been a true achievement on their part to lose weight. Doesn't matter that they were over weight in the first place that is like saying to a drug addict or a an alcoholic you never should have started doing it in the first place, not helpful. It an addiction to food and they have conquered both the physical hunger and the mental struggles of which contributed to their weight problem. I commend them both for doing this on their own and any surgery that would take place after the fact isn't covered on the NHS so they will have to fund it themselves if they so wish. Why don't we focus on the positive outcome! They are terrific couple and I am so proud, well done!!!

Well done both of you, regardless of what thin people think about weight issues it's no easy task to lose it or stop putting it on in some cases. Keep encouraging each other to keep it off now.

Fantastic acheivement guys, you should be very proud of yourselves. So many people do nothing about their weight problems and go through life with health problems saying they dont know how they got so fat as they dont eat much! This couple have acknowledged they had issues with food and have done something about it. Good luck for the rest of your weigh loss.

My BMI is apparently twice what it should be and when I asked my (slim) doctor what to do he said I should 'eat less and move more'. I am 47 and have been battling weight all my life so this was less than helpful. I really applaud anyone who can lose weight -skinny people really do have no idea how hard it is. So; Jane and Jim - well done. I appreciate how hard that must have been. xx
