THE stunning new bar at York Station should be open within weeks – and its manager says it will be one of the best in the world.
Elvington-based beer company Pivovar has been working on the old tearooms at the north end of the station, and it should reopen as The York Tap early next month.
It is the company’s fourth bar, following the success of Pivni in Patrick Pool in York, and the Sheffield Tap and Euston Tap in Sheffield and London respectively.
Yan Pilkington, who will manage the new bar, said it would be the company’s best yet and act as its flagship, with its offices also based on the same site.
He said: “We are looking to blow people way and do something nobody has ever done before on that scale really.
“You get cask ale bars in old buildings, but this puts it on the stage it deserves.
“The building is something to look at in itself, as well as for the beer.
“In my opinion, it will be one of the best in the world.
“I like to think it will be something nobody else can offer, certainly not in England. It’s going to be a unique venue, with real attention to detail.” The bar will have 32 taps on the bar, with a wide range of British and foreign beers, including 16 UK cask ales.
Mr Pilkington, who has been with the company for two years, said the bar would employ about 20 staff, ten to 15 of whom would be new employees. “This will be the jewel in the crown for the company,” he said.
““It’s going to be very impressive.
“There are some features people will not even have realised are there. I can’t wait!”
The building, which was built in the early 1900s, will include restored original fireplaces and stained-glass windows and skylights.
Scaffolding remains on the building at the moment, but should be taken down in about a week’s time.
