YORK’S ten most dirty streets have been revealed by city officials.

Streets in the Huntington Road, Hull Road, Burton Stone Lane and Tadcaster Road areas have been the subject of the most requests for a council clean-up in the past 18 months.

The Huntington Road area, which stretches for more than two miles, is top of the list with 42 complaints logged in the past 18 months, including 19 complaints about dog fouling, six about glass and five each about dead animals and litter.

Since February 2010 to July 2011, streets in the Hull Road area have attracted 27 complaints including eight complaints about glass and six each about dead animals and litter. Meanwhile, Burton Stone Lane and the Tadcaster Road area have each been the subject of 24 requests for action including nine complaints about drug-related litter and five about rubbish in the Burton Stone Lane area, and ten about waste and seven about litter in Tadcaster Road.

Coun Janet Looker said: “I’m surprised that Huntington Road is so high up the list. I’m very concerned by the figures and we are currently looking at ways to react more quickly but our biggest problem is individual people who drop litter in the first place.

“If we all pick our rubbish up and take it home we could keep the streets an awful lot cleaner. We could all play our part in this.”

She said the council was looking at a variety of initiatives to improve streets, including an application to allow residents to complain by texting in pictures.

Lower down in the top ten, Shipton Road area had 21 complaints, the Haxby Road area received 21 cleaning requests, and the areas of Wetherby Road, Poppleton Road, Moor Lane and Stamford Street East each generated 18 cleansing service requests. The figures were released as part of a Freedom of Information request. Coun Fiona Fitzpatrick said she was confident the cleanliness of Hull Road was improving.

She said: “We’re working very closely with the street cleansing team and we have been going out on walks they do every Thursday.

“We are disappointed but we are new councillors and we are quite positive and are determined things will improve.” Coun Ken King, of Clifton Ward, said: “I’m disappointed that the Burton Stone Lane area is classed as one of the dirtiest in York. One of the problems is the number of cars parked in the terraced streets which makes it difficult for the streets to be cleaned. We do put notices up to periodically clean the streets.”
