AMID cries of disappointment, Scarborough Business Park, the 83 acre development off the A64, has missed out in the latest Government announcement of new enterprise zones.

But among the 11 new areas which will benefit from discounts on business rates, new superfast broadband, lower levels of planning control and the potential to use enhanced capital allowances, will be the Humber Waterside Enterprise Zone.

It becomes part of the Humber Estuary Renewable Energy Super-Cluster, expected to create 5,000 jobs over the next four years - part of the plan to generate 30,000 new jobs from all 11 by 2015.

They include enterprise zones in major cities like Manchester, Birmingham, Merseyside and Newcastle.

The new Humber Waterside Enterprise Zone is now likely to attract offshore wind turbine manufacturers and businesses there could save nearly £8 million in business rates.

Scarborough Business Park has just undergone a £10 million infrastructure project in partnership between Caddick Developments and Scarborough Borough Council, Already planning consent has been obtained to for a variety of uses, including industrial, distribution, offices, car showrooms, and hotel, restaurants and shops.

Pauline Elliott, Scarborough Borough Council's Head of Regeneration and Planning Services said: "Of course we are very disappointed that the enterprise zone bid for Scarborough's Business Park was unsuccessful.

"We will be meeting with the Department for Communities and Local Government and securing their promised support from UK Trade and Industry to help us secure new investment into Scarborough Business Park.

"We will also be looking at ways of simplifying planning procedures to speed up applications for the site and create as many new jobs as possible."

York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) said in a statement that it was "naturally very disappointed".

But, it said: "This doesn't detract from the work the LEP is doing to grow the businesses across the region. Coastal regeneration remains a priority."
