YORK has been hailed as a transport trailblazer after securing £4.65 million in Government funding.

Norman Baker, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, visited the city yesterday to speak to City of York Council chiefs about how their share of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund will be used.

The grant was confirmed last week and will be used to encourage walking, cycling and public transport use and promote electric vehicles.

Mr Baker, who also took a look at the Cycle Heaven venture at York Station, said: “York has been ahead of the curve on transport for some time. We expected a strong bid from the city and we weren’t disappointed.

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to fund this project and look forward to seeing it come to fruition.”

With this sort of money why not buy every york resident a bicycle and then more will cycle
OR set up a London type Barclays cycling scheme within the ring road. The London scheme is great. i use it when i go on business and its heavily subscribed
Dont waste it on extortianatly expensive cycle tracks or ridiculous road schemes Make it really count

£4,000,000 will be used to pay for salaries to run the project leaving just £650,000 to invest and then I bet it goes over budget.

So that'll be £4 million on many a consultants viability study and the rest on ineffective measures as usual then!

The Govt's LSTF grant criteria required Local Authorities to improve transport choices across a geographical area. York chose to concentrate on an area to the north of the City which is divided by the River Foss, and create new links to improve its local travel choices. This will not just benefit cycling.

In an ideal world its a good idea. Sadly its not an ideal world.
Given the state of our economy, the money could be better spent elsewhere.
Secondly, I don't trust the muppets who will spend this money. They will waste it on "consultants". If they then use it on projects and schemes as they have in the past, they will no doubt cause havoc and disruption to the City's roads.
If we have to spend this money then let's have some different thinking and not just waste it as we have in previous schemes , where the money is just spent on crazy ideas because they think it doesn't matter as its not ratepayers money.
Why not look at completely seperate networks of cycle paths and what about using the river and more.
I am afraid that our Council and the permanent Civil Servants in planning will just squander this cash.

Contribution from highly taxed motorists most of it
Contribution from untaxed cyclists almost nothing

Many cyclists that you see around York are car owners as well, but have sensibly chosen two wheels for short distance journeys.
The money which Government raise from Vehicle Excise Duty is lumped together with income from all other national taxes which most of us pay, and redistributed. The DfT gets a slice and a smidgeon of this is funding the LSTF. Chickenfeed compared to the millions it passes on to the Highways Agency for building and maintaining Mways and trunk roads. Of these York has only the A64.
All other road upkeep in York is locally funded from Council Tax

No it isn't the capital funding comes from the Government, plus one off bids for specific schemes.

I do that as part of the sheme they consider using the network of rail tracks around York. A train tram service would be brilliant, especially if it could be linked in with P&R.

A train shuttle on the Scarborough and Harrogate lines as a park and ride scheme would be a good investment.

Me suspects that the real reason for wanting to sell-off Union Terrace Car park was to gain cash to keep the direct labour crew employed. This 'pot' should help obviate that?
Oh.....and, please, please, please. No more joint pedestrian/cycling lanes. Cyclists don't use them and the CYC idiots pepper them with these 'ribbed' paving slabs. Fine in theory but think about poor bairns in push-chairs! they nearly shake my grandson's teeth out. They are worse then useless and ALL should be binned. Job creation at its worse.

In a sense that's true. In the real world it's BS. What is the percentage of taxed to untaxed cyclists? We all pay council tax - just ask Paul about what that goes towards.
I reckon untaxed cyclists are children as they are ineligible.

I just shelled out a load of money to tax my car. I haven't driven it for a month, my bike's done a fair few miles though.
By your reasoning I should get a rebate.
All the regular cyclists I know barring one person run cars and pay their taxes.

You've made a career out of talking out of your bum Mike, and you've never ever got any better.

As the York Press have decided to not print the full facts - it was the previous Lib Dem adminstration that put together and submitted the successful bid - before a certain attention seeking Council Leader in the photo decides to claim the credit yet again & reinvent the actualite!!
If anyone wants to check this - it's simple - just contact the City Council for confirmation.

damage to roads caused by motor vehicles = 99.999%. Damage caused to roads by cycles = 0.001%. Funding for roads in York: from council tax. Car Tax = central government spending pot.

Please get your facts correct before stirring up the lets-hate-cyclists brigade. motorists are taxed as their vehicles do more damage to roads, environment, other people if involved in a collision... how many times has a motorist killed a cyclist? how many times has a motorist killed an innocent pedestrian? now compare these to the distinct lack of times a cyclist has killed an innocent pedestrian or a motorist, and maybe just maybe you might be able to get your mind around the reasons why more money is being spent on cycle facilities, and maybe you'll be able to properly contribute to a discussion with well-advised and well-founded comments... however, considering your biased ill-informed comment above, I won't hold my breath.
