YORK’S English Martyrs’ RC Primary School are through to tomorrow’s final of the Drax Cup, the biggest cricket competition for under-9s in the country.

The team, pictured above, won the North Yorkshire area final in a thrilling head-to-head with York rivals Dunnington Primary, emerging victorious by two runs, 246 to 244.

Pannal Primary School, from Harrogate, finished third having also topped their group of three schools to make the final pool before losing against English Martyrs’ and Dunnington in the play-offs.

A total of nine schools from North Yorkshire competed in the area final at Dunnington Cricket Club.

Queen Ethelburga’s College in Thorpe Underwood were fifth overall, with North Duffield Primary School, from near Selby, batting hard in all their matches.

English Martyrs’ now face Alwoodley Primary School, of Leeds, Snaith Primary School, near Goole, and Wickersley Northfield Primary School, of Rotherham, in the finals at Headingley tomorrow.

The finals are being held before Yorkshire’s Friends Life t20 clash with Nottinghamshire.
