THE world-famous Tornado steam locomotive is back on public display at the National Railway Museum in York.
Tornado has undergone a lengthy renovation in Germany and the reassembling process at the museum involves the locomotive being restored to full working order complete with traditional Brunswick green paintwork.
The renovation, which required over £3 million in donations, was applauded by Mark Allatt, chairman of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust who praised the hard work of volunteers and contractors.
Tornado became the first steam locomotive to be built in 50 years when it was completed in 2008 and will be on display on the turntable in the NRM’s Great Hall every day until next Wednesday before it starts trips across the North Yorkshire Moors on Wednesday, May 25. The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm and admission is free.
