11pm

THE Conservatives have strengthened their hold on East Riding of Yorkshire Council as they claimed six more seats at the local elections.

The party took control of Cottingham South as its candidates Helen Green and Lena Slater unseated their Liberal Democrat rivals, and also picked up two seats in both South West Hokderness and St Mary's as well as winning one in Minster and Woodmansey.

Their only setback was losing one of their Bridlington South seats to Labour, but the Tories now have 53 councillors in East Yorkshire.

Mirroring the national picture, it was a bad night for the Lib Dems as they lost nine seats and now have just three councillors. They have gone from being the second-largest party to falling behind Labour, who gained three seats.

Independent candidates also claimed three seats and the East Yorkshire Independents one, Josephine Head in Goole North, while the Social Democratic Party retained their one seat in Bridlington Central and Old Town. The Tories swept the board in Pocklington Provincial, with Stephen Lane, Claude Mole and Kay West being elected.
