TWO of York’s Green Party candidates for the local elections have been "digging for victory".

Andy D’Agorne and Dave Taylor, who are standing in the Fishergate ward, got their hands dirty at a communal gardening event at Alma Grove, aimed at clearing dead plants ravaged by the winter frost and digging out weeds.

The new section of the communal garden was created in October 2008 with funding from Fishergate ward committee after residents voted for local money to be spent on the project.

“The real success is that the community is organising itself to do these things now,” said Mr Taylor.

“Andy and I turned up to help for a couple of hours, but it’s the people who live in these streets who are taking it forward and working with the Edible York group to plant fruit bushes in place of undergrowth cleared over the winter. It’s a great example for other areas in York to follow.”
