THE Queen’s 85th birthday was marked in spectacular style in Museum Gardens with the firing of a Royal Salute.

Crowds of visitors gathered in the warm spring sunshine at noon yesterday to see the 101 (Northumbrian) Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) fire 20 rounds from three light field guns.

Those watching the spectacle were also treated to a performance by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Band.

One of those in York for the salute was Peter Hawley, 64, who was visiting the city from Oxford, over the Easter weekend.

He said: “It was excellent. We didn’t know anything about this and someone mentioned it in a shop nearby. We are glad we came over.”

York is one of 12 saluting stations in the UK and the only one in the North of England.
