A HOST of York football-avid schoolchildren revelled in the third annual Tregelles football tournament.

Some 17 primary schools competed in the event at The Mount School playing-fields just off Dalton Terrace, in York, to the delight of players, teachers, parents and organisers.

The league winners were: gold – Huntington School; silver – Archbishop of York School; and bronze – English Martyrs.

The fair play award, sponsored by Activate Sports Camps and given to the team displaying the most sporting behaviour, was won by Our Lady’s School.

But all the youngsters who took part were the winners. Besides trophies for the leading teams, there were medals for each child, who all got a hot-dog, which was ravenously consumed, thanks to the backing provided by sponsors Wigginton Dental Practice, UKWM, AMA Conferences and TEK Matters.

Said organiser Tim Moat: “It’s the third year of the competition and it has grown stronger and stronger and better.

“We struggled for teams in the first year, but this season we have had to turn teams away so popular has the event become.

“This was our most successful tournament yet and it has turned into quite a community event.”

Thanking the assistance of the York Schools Sports Partnership which helped to organise the tournament, Moat also praised the efforts of local football coach Glenn Robinson.

“His assistance on the day was very valuable,” added Moat.

The schools who took part were: Tregelles, Hempland, St Aelred’s, St Paul’s, Heworth, Our Lady’s, English Martyrs, Huntington, Bootham Juniors, Osbaldwick, Clifton Green, St Wilfrid’s, Park Grove, Clifton Without, Robert Wilkinson, Archbishop of York Juniors and Hob Moor.
