WORK has begun on the next stage of creating a safe route to a primary school in York.

The Stockton Lane project, in the Heworth area of the city, will see a zebra crossing installed at its junction with Hempland Lane and changes to the junction’s existing layout.

The scheme is intended to make the walk to school safer for pupils at nearby Hempland Primary School. Heworth councillor Ruth Potter said: “These works are to be welcomed as part of our commitment to safe routes to schools in Heworth and other measures are already in place which improve safety for pupils.”

Fellow ward councillor Barbara Boyce said the Stockton Lane scheme was the culmination of a campaign to keep children safe on the school run, which had also seen Heworth and Tang Hall Primary Schools benefit.
