MORE than 100 young women have already entered this year’s Miss York contest after a successful launch event at a city centre nightclub.

Organiser Naomi Smith, herself a former winner and a Miss England runner-up, said some “fantastic girls” were signing up for the contest.

Naomi claimed anyone had the potential to be Miss York and even Miss England, without having to be the most beautiful girl in the competition to win.

“What we look for is a girl who has personality and stands out,” she said.

“She will have to meet and talk to lots of different people and be a representative, so it is important that she is personable and shows an interest in others.

“Some girls may be concerned that they aren’t pretty enough to enter. But the face of Miss England is changing. It is no longer a stereotypical ‘beauty pageant’, where girls are paraded around in their underwear.

“It is more and more about finding a girl to be a good role model for others, especially younger girls, and can be used as a platform for raising concerns or issues important to the young of today as well as raising awareness and money for charities.”

Naomi said it was also good fun and a chance to meet people.

Talent scouts were out at Club Salvation in George Hudson Street to encourage girls to enrol for the competition. Everyone who signed up had their picture taken by photographer Robert Nemeti and enjoyed a complimentary glass of champagne. She said many local businesses were getting involved in the contest, including JetScreen, who supplied the scouts’ T-shirts on Saturday, DK Model Management, Seville’s Audio-Visual, The Architects Shop, NemetiPhotos, Orillo Productions, Kathryn Rolfe Underwear, Thimbelina and the Dutch Nurseries.

Anyone unable to get to the Club Salvation launch event can still enter by emailing info@missyork.co.uk or going to facebook.com/missyorkcompetition

Online applications close on April 3. The final will be held at the Royal York Hotel on Sunday, May 22, and the winner will gain automatic entry into the Miss England final.

.
100 gulible blonde teenagers enter the Miss York competition. All without children or boyfriends.
.
One must question whether or not they know that the single and no children rules is so the pervert judges can have first crack at tatooing there names on there ankles and bagging some "fresh meat"
.
Its truely amazing people still fall for this!

Perhaps the "blonde" is a reference to that totally unwarranted assertion associating this particular hair colour with a certain level of cognitive functioning.

Cant believe that the Press keeps on giving positive press to this outdated competition. Shame on all the businesses named who have lent their customers money to this ridiculous joke.

I am shocked and amazed at these comments.

If you have not been involved in the competition then you cannot know what it entails. I was in Miss York a few years ago and really enjoyed the experience! It is not about being ‘blonde’ or having a low IQ. I have a First Class degree from a redbrick university as do many of the girls who enter or are working towards them. It is girls wanting to have fun and do something a bit different. There is no cause of offence and I do not think that it deserves the amount of criticism which it has received.

The rules of eligibility are set by the Miss World Organisation. If you are married you are not a Miss and if you have children and win Miss England then you must make a full time commitment and it would not be viable to have a child with you. You must also have never posed topless or have a criminal record which in my oppinion are fairly good rules for someone who is expected to be a good role model.

I was also in Salvation and spoke to the team, they all worked really hard and did a brilliant job. One on the men that you are referring to was gay and the other works for a professional model agency. I saw no evidence of either being ‘sleazy’.

The Miss York Competition raises a lot of money for local charities and gives promotion to local businesses as well as being thoroughly enjoyable to those who take part. Don't judge what you do not understand.

I can categorically say, that as one of the gentlemen in the picture above, that either of us were in any way sleazy to potential contestants or any other women in the night club.

I personally find 'TheTruthHurts, York's comment offensive. How can one be 'passing and couldnt help but have a little look' without going through the trouble of queuing and paying entry for the night club.

I think this maybe a case of sour grapes.

We had many promising applicants on the night in question. The Miss York competition is enjoyable, charitable and gives young women both pride and confidence.

I think people need to give the Miss York Competition a chance, stop being so pessimistic and start enjoying life a little!!

You only live once! SO ENJOY IT!!!
