ALTHOUGH Christmas is still nearly a year away, York theatre-goers were not deterred from queuing around the block for pantomime tickets.

Fans brought folding chairs, picnics and even china mugs, to wait patiently for tickets to go on sale at the Theatre Royal.

The first people arrived shortly before 10pm on Monday and by the time the box office came to open at 9am yesterday the queue stretched around the corner toward the Minster.

Rebecca Storey, the theatre’s press and media manager, said around 2,000 tickets for The York Family Robinson were sold by noon.

She said: “We had a woman in her nineties queuing from 6am.

“The pantomime is so engrained in tradition that every year some people have the same seats. Some people have been sitting in the same seat for 30 years.

“There are people in the queue saying ‘see you next year’ to one another - it’s the only time they see each other.

“Last year’s pantomime broke all our box office records and we are hoping records will be broken this year too.”

Staff from the theatre served morning tea and coffee to people waiting in the queue. Demand for tickets was especially high as pantomime-goers could only buy tickets in person yesterday.

The York Family Robinson, the 33rd pantomime from director, writer and pantomime Dame, Berwick Kaler, will begin on December 15. The script follows the Robinson family as they travel the world on a mission to find the only living link with the beginning of time.

Those who want to attend the final night’s performance should register their interest at the box office and names will be pulled from a hat.

From 9am today, tickets can be bought by phoning the box office on 01904 623568.

Online sales open at 10am at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

You only have to look online to see which seats are already taken such as xmas eve and the final day so if you want these types of dates the you have to buy them now!

I went for the first time last year, always thinking it would be rubbish but it was fantastic. Berwick Kaler was brilliant as were all the others and it was a brilliant fun night. I would recommend it to all of you. As a real cynic previously, I have now completely changed my opinion

Tickets atually went on sale the same day as thy went on sale at the timer office. I checked at 7pm and you could buy em despite ye theatre telling me you couldn't get them until 10am te next day.

And yes I am one of the sad people who go year in year out. Used to be a aceptic and thought everyone was crazy...........then I tried it and now it's a family tradition that'll never end (well maybe when berwick retires)

Who rattled your cage? I have a life. And it does not involve standing outside a theatre like a numpty to see a pantomine.

Yes but Dirt McGirt, your life only involves making pathetic comments on this website - like a numpty.
