LEADING national trade unionist Hugh Lanning addressed anti-Government protesters in York as the local campaign against the cuts gathered strength.
Following a city centre march and rally on Saturday, York Stop The Cuts held a public meeting in Clements Hall, in Nunthorpe Road.
Mr Lanning, deputy general secretary of the civil servants’ union PCS, was joined on the platform by Dr James Chan, of York Hospital, and other local public sector workers.
Speakers also included Labour councillor Janet Looker, Green Party activist Andy Chase, Sophie Shaw, of York Students Against Cuts, and Keith Blackburn, branch secretary of the Communications Workers Union.
York Stop the Cuts plans a rally tomorrow outside the Mansion House when City of York councillors meet to decide the authority’s 2011/12 budget.
