THE sudden closure of two shops in Micklegate has prompted a call for more to be done to attract visitors to the street.

The long-established Blake Head Book Shop and café closed its doors without warning earlier this month only days before the nearby Yorkshire Food Company deli was cleared of stock and closed.

The business had been running in Micklegate for less than 18 months.

Labour ward councillor for the area Dave Merrett said: “It’s a real loss to the street. I just hope that somebody who values what they provided might be able to take them up. The council does need a regeneration programme for Micklegate – the street’s looking tired in a lot of respects.”
