AN ABANDONED puppy which was found whimpering on a train was given some first-class treatment by kind-hearted rail staff.

The Staffordshire bull terrier puppy was discovered on a First TransPennine Express (FTPE) service from Liverpool to Scarborough.

Jake Magson, the duty station supervisor at Scarborough, said: “We handle hundreds of lost items every year, and there is some very strange stuff left on our trains.

“Half of a pair of false teeth wrapped in a napkin was, until recently, the most bizarre item until this cute little puppy appeared.”

The puppy was taken by conductor Sam Whitehead to York and handed over to carers from the charity Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue, who named her Penny.

A charity spokesperson said: “Staffies are the most fun-loving and tolerant dogs in the world and Penny is no exception.

“She’ll make someone a cracking pet one day.”

Staff at FTPE’s offices at York and Manchester have held a dress-down day and raised more than £150 to help support and feed Penny for the year ahead.

FTPE has also set up a donation page so members of the public can help support Penny in the future, at justgiving.com/tpeslostandfoundhound.

Anyone who would like to adopt Penny or another dog from Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue should phone Chris Clark on 01945 474418 or email staffylover@btinternet.com
