AN investigation has been launched to find the source of the suspect package that caused chaos in York city centre today.
Hundreds of workers were evacuated and thousands of commuters disrupted after a bomb-scare at the York headquarters of insurance giant Aviva.
Much of the city centre was cordoned off to vehicles and pedestrians from 7.20am until 9.45am, following the discovery in the mail room of Yorkshire House on Rougier Street.
North Yorkshire Police have now confirmed the package was not dangerous but they are trying to ascertain where it came from.
A force spokesman said: “The package did not pose a danger to the public and we are working with Aviva to establish its origins.
“We understand that a lot of disruption was caused in the city this morning, however officers responded to a call made in good faith and we have a duty to take every precaution in circumstances such as these.”
A spokesperson for Aviva said the package was not detonated, but was safely disposed of by the army.
