The Star Inn at Harome ‘shocked’ at losing Michelin Star

Jacquie Pern Jacquie Pern

THE Star Inn at Harome has lost its Michelin Star in this year’s guide.

Run by Andrew and Jacquie Pern, the pub and restaurant near Helmsley has held the fine-dining accolade since 2002.

Jacquie said they were very disappointed and had only found out through a customer.

She said: “We never know when we’ve been visited or get any feedback, but we were quite shocked as the response we have from customers is always very positive.

“A lot of people eat with us on a regular basis – on average we are doing 1,000 covers a week – and our aim is to ensure we consistently offer a high standard and customers are well looked after.”

The Star, which has been run by Andrew and Jacquie since 1996, recently topped a poll of industry experts to be named best gastropub in the country.

The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2011 marks the publication’s 100th anniversary.

...and they want to publicise the fact?

I'm stunned - I've eaten there recently, and the meal I had was up to their usual incredibly high standards.

They maybe gave them a bit more scrutinisation after the old "dunking" stories that were publicised a while ago.

wasn't ther a food poisoning outbreak as well a while back? Could have been visited then, or the judge read the press.

One word.... COMPLACENCY

They have taken their focus away from the The Star to develop their other businesses in the empire and even a 1% drop in standards means that you lose your Michelin Star. The troubles with staff and food poisoning is just a manifestation of this.

I would certainly say that the standards are still high but certainly not as good as 2002 or even a couple of years ago. Let's hope they view it as a shot across the bows and doubel their efforts to retain it...

I meant "regain it"....!!

I would add that The Pipe & Glass is a step up from The Star and that has retained its 1 star. Other Yorkshire stars are Yorke Arms, Pateley Bridge; Box Tree, Ilkley; Old Vicarage, Sheffield; Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey - well done to them all...

The fact they only found out from a customer is a bit hard to believe too.

From the programmes/things I've read on the subject the impression I have is that chefs on the cusp, or in possession, of a Michelin star treat the day the guide comes out as if it's their A-Level results day.

If it's true then maybe they did take their eye off the ball a little.

Good point Swiss - 18th January was a date that any relevant restaurant had in bold in their diary.

What does it matter if a Michelin Star is lost? It is only the opinion of one person on one (or two )days. Quite a lot of so called 1st class restaurants are over rated
with chefs out of touch of what the majority of the public want.
One definition of "fine dinning" I heard was,
small portions on large plates and vastly overpriced.

Another example of empire-building being put before the core rationale of the business. Hardly surprising that it has lost its 'star', last time I ate there it was ordinary to say the least. Trying to repeat the success by buying competition and jacking up prices does not help. I like to see local businesses succeed, and hopefully this will be a wake-up call.
They learnt of the loss from a customer just about sums it up. Most chefs will be waiting for the publication, but apparently they were so complacent that they didn't think it mattered.

attention to detail must have slipped. Titles such as this need more than a cursury glance!

I blame the phenomenon that is Morrisons/Tesco MUTANT FRUITS.

It is a great shame that the Star has lost its"star" however I do think they had it coming, the standard has definatley slipped and I beliveve this is mainly due to a lack of commitment/interest from both the Chef Owner and his Head Chef. Maybe if the focus in the kitchen had been soley on the food and less on messing about and the bullying of kids in the kitchen then they may not be in this situation today. I hope that finally lessons may be learned!

I have been dining at The Star for the last eight years and it is, as always of a superb standard.
Food poisoning.... NEVER, it was the noro virus. Many establishments in the vicinity have been unlucky enough to be struck down with it over the winter months, as do hospitals, schools etc.
Looking forward to them regaining their star in the future.

Complacency has certainly stepped in at the Star..and arrogance, I do not think they deserve a Michelin Star either for the food or the manner in which guests are treared - perhaps the inspectors witnessed both. I am not surprised at the loss of the star; the standards at The Black Swan at Oldstead and the Yorke Arms far surpass the Star Inn and both are genuinely freindly places to spend time. Not even an apology from the Star for all the people who fell ill after eating at their restaurant a while back.
