FIREFIGHTERS from York were called to one of their most unusual jobs – when a pond caught fire.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said diesel leaked on to the run-off pond in the Howden Lane area of Crockey Hill, south of York, and was then ignited by burning rubbish nearby.
A spokesman said vegetation near the pond was then set on fire, including an old tree stump.
Twelve firefighters from York and Acomb put out the blaze using foam and beaters.
He said the diesel had been in a pipe feeding an industrial heater and had leaked after the pipe burst in the recent bitterly cold weather.
