THE chef at an award-winning Yorkshire pub cooked up a treat for pupils of a North Yorkshire school who faced a day without hot dinners.

When Kelly McCarthy dropped her son off at Appleton Roebuck Primary School yesterday, staff told her that dinners were off after both cooks had been unable to make it to work because of the snow.

Mrs McCarthy, who runs Ye Old Sun Inn, in Colton, near Tadcaster, with her husband Ashley, offered the pub’s services and by 11.30am, was delivering more than 30 dinners to the small village school.

Thrilled headmaster, Derek Angood, said: “Neither of our cooking staff was able to make it in. Mrs McArthy was dropping off her son and when she heard we had a problem she offered to help.

“I’m extremely grateful.

“It was the one bit of the day we couldn’t save, but then we were offered the services of culinary experts.”

Ye Old Sun Inn was crowned Best Freehouse in the country at this year’s Great British Pub Awards.
