THE worst November snowfall the region has seen in 14 years brought disruption to schools and roads.

Nine schools, mainly around Malton and Whitby, told pupils to stay home yesterday, while Boynton Primary School in Bridlington closed its doors.

As police and breakdown services reported a number of traffic incidents, the Met Office warned there would be more snow to come during the weekend.

A spokeswoman said: “The snow we have seen is the most widespread we have had in November for the last 14 years and there will be more of the same.

“The north-east is going to be one of the worst-affected areas. There’s more snow to come and it’s going to be bitterly cold, so there could be early-morning ice-patches over the road.”

Disruption on the roads began on Wednesday evening, and North Yorkshire Police reported 35 incidents up to last night, though there were no major injuries.

Sutton Bank remained closed throughout most of the day, and other roads were blocked while emergency services cleared the aftermath of accidents.

The A684 at Winton Bank saw severe disruption in and out of Northallerton after a Honda Civic overturned yesterday morning. In nearby Bullamoor Road, a two-vehicle crash partially blocked the road.

A North Yorkshire County Council spokesman said: “Our snow ploughs and gritters are working constantly to make sure all our major routes are open.”

In East Yorkshire, police said conditions on the A165 to Bridlington and the A1079 between York and Beverly were dangerous after snow fell on compacted ice.

The A166 near Driffield also saw disruption due to a jack-knifed lorry, while one lane of the A1033 had a lane closed while a car was removed from a ditch.
