THEY are a far cry from the Premiership – but this York football team will be treated like stars at the top of their game this season.
New Earswick’s The Fox FC, which plays in the York Minster Engineering League, has fought off competitors from around the country to win a life-changing “premier makeover” worth £20,000, after scooping the top prize for Best Goal Celebration.
Players in The Fox FC will be treated like premiership superstars for an entire season, with a makeover for the team’s clubhouse, a new kit and kit washing service, executive travel to and from away matches, and a training session with a leading football coach.
The New Earswick team was set up last year to help raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and has already raised over £2,800 for the charity.
They were selected as the winner after competition organisers were impressed by the club’s fun, enthusiastic goal celebration, and its support for a fantastic cause.
For its entry into the competition, The Fox FC submitted captain Lee Quickmire’s goal celebration after scoring against Conference side York City in a charity match earlier this year.
In the clip, Lee ripped open his shirt into shreds before subbing himself and collapsing on the floor in a blaze of glory. “I am more barrel-shaped that six-pack but I thought it would be comical,” he said.
Lee found out about the competition through Facebook and thought it would be a good way to raise the football club’s profile and their work for charity.
“I never actually expected we would win,” he said. “When I found out I was actually gobsmacked. It is something that happens to other people.
“It just shows you can run a club, support a charity, and live like a Premiership star.”
And wives and girlfriends of players won’t miss out on the action – all WAGs will get pampered with beauty treatments and a shopping experience before a VIP night out at a top London club.
“It is good they get something too,” said Lee. “They all put up with a lot and so they deserve a treat.”
The prize was donated by Glidden Trade.

In the days of Tom Lockie I was a trialist at York City playing for Bootham United. In my first match I scored a goal from the wing and celebrations consisted of a rollicking from the coach at not passing it for Graham Potter to score as he was their 'rising star' at the time. After my irreverent hand gesture back to Tom I was never asked to play again...
