Let me set the scene. It’s very dark. The moon, struggling to peep out from behind the cloudy sky, throws dappled light on to pumpkins which line a path to a smoke-filled entrance. You are welcomed by a warty witch. Scared yet? Are you starting to get the hint that this experience probably isn’t best suited to the weak hearted?
Situated at York Maze, Hallowscream By Night is described as “a journey to the dark side for a terrifyingly entertaining night to remember”.
The Maze certainly makes use of its surroundings, and with four main attractions that share a common goal in mind you can be guaranteed a fun night will be had.
Directed to a dimly lit barn – decked out with coffins and lit with flames, we were asked to make ourselves comfortable and prepare for An Audience With The Undertakers – a brilliant act who kindly came back from the dead to relay tales of ghosts and monsters in the most engaging manner.
TIP: If you don’t want to jump from your seat too much take refuge towards the back but not at the edge….
Getting into the spirit of things, The Curse Of The Corn was next on the agenda and this attraction started with brilliant tension. Driven a short distance to the start point, I sat nervously with others as screams became louder the closer we got.
Opposite sat a clown who looked like he had the worst personality disorder you could conjure with make-up to boot, who offered only dead-pan looks and non-responsive reactions to our nervous giggles.
Separated into small groups we were led through an opening into the maze which was softly lit. If you can imagine Chain Saw Massacre and Nightmare On Elm Street all mixed up in a field of maize having a party at your expense, then you will have some idea of what is in store.
TIP: Wear heavy-duty shoes, ones you can run in if need be.
It’s the last day tomorrow, and tickets are available at yorkmazehallowscream.co.uk
