THE wait is over to find out which local landmarks have made the board on the York edition of Monopoly.

The revelation was taking place at the Jorvik Viking Centre today, and games will be on sale in shops and online from 9am. The Press can exclusively reveal that the Treasurer’s House has been named as the Old Kent Road on the board game, while the traditional train stations have been replaced by the city’s historic Walmgate, Bootham, Micklegate and Monk Bars.

But game-makers Winning Moves insisted Old Kent Road was actually one of the most sought after locations, because it is so high profile.

Graham Barnes, of Winning Moves, said: “Old Kent Road is one of our most talked-about sites and as far as we are concerned is the most high-profile position after Mayfair which is at the other end of the board.

“It is also one of very few which also appears on the box lid and also appears in the form of a customised Community Chest card.”

The public was invited to make suggestions for landmarks on the board, when the York edition was announced earlier this year. The Press received a prestigious place on the latest edition, holding the Fleet Street square, historic home of British newspapers.

Graham said: “Without the great York public this game could not have been produced, so we would like to thank everyone for their input.” Three North Yorkshire-based charities were also given prominence on the board after a public vote, with Martin House, Our Celebration, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation taking the place of the Community Chest squares.

David Sommer, sales director of Winning Moves UK, said: “Interest from retailers has been huge. This game has surpassed our expectations even before the first copy has been sold. We’ve also had interest from ex-pats living abroad so this Christmas the Monopoly York Edition will be played all over the world.”
