TIPS for cooking perfect portion sizes and planning meals will be served up at the York Festival of Food and Drink.

Staff from the York and North Yorkshire waste partnership will be handing out suggestions on how to cook perfect pasta portions and hints on how to plan meals to reduce food waste and save money. With the average household throwing away £50 of good food every month, the Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to encourage better food management by reducing food waste and saving money.

One way is by making smoothies from leftover fruit and vegetables and to illustrate the point the festival will feature a bike-powered smoothie maker.

County councillor Clare Wood, chairman of York and North Yorkshire waste partnership said: “Reducing food waste by not cooking too much and planning meals are easy ways we can all save money and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill in York and North Yorkshire.

“I am pleased we are building on the success of our love food hate waste campaign and the smoothie bicycle is a novel way for residents to find out how easy it is to make exciting drinks from fruit and vegetables.”

Staff from the partnership will be at the York Festival of Food and Drink on September 17, 18, 19 and 23, 24, 25.
