Lane closure at busy York junction comes into force

IMPROVEMENTS to a busy York junction have led to a temporary lane closure coming into force today.

Emergency drainage works to investigate a collapsed manhole at the junction of Blossom Street, Micklegate and Queen Street mean the two outbound lanes on Queen Street were being reduced to one lane from 9.30am.

The closure will remain into tomorrow while City of York Council’s ancient monuments team will also be carrying out work on Micklegate Bar while Micklegate is closed this weekend as part of the junction improvements.

As long as PP can get through on his preferred mode of transport then the world will be OK.

Improvements may be the wrong word.

It seems my suggestion to CYC all those months ago to knock down the Bar and build a roundabout in the middle of the junction have gone unnoticed....

Mrs PP mentioned it to me yesterday as being something of a squeeze. I "looked into" the hole today, and it's an arched structure just below the ground level. Wouldn't take much for it to collapse, so maybe as well that it's been discovered at this time during the Micklegate Bar closure period.

It's not a collapsed manhole, they've managed to dig into someone's cellar! Only CofYC could manage that.

Ha, such an exageration! They've hit the cellar roof when digging with shovels - It's not like they've broken through with a JCB! And from the massive hole i saw yesterday as i walked past, it wasn't a cellar they were excavating.

The walk down Micklegate is a lot more pleasant while these works have been going on...
