Paul Tune pleads guilty to sex assaults

A FORMER Selby resident has pleaded guilty to a string of sexual assaults on a young girl more than 40 years ago.

York Crown Court heard 62-year-old Paul Brian Tune admit seven counts of indecent assault and two further counts of a more serious sexual assault, on the same girl, between the years 1962 and 1966.

The earliest of the assaults took place when the victim, who cannot be named for legal reason, was aged only 13.

Tune, who now lives in Faulkner Road, in Solihull, West Midlands, will return to York Crown Court next month to learn his sentence.

The prosecution team accepted not guilty pleas from Tune on a further two counts of the serious sexual allegations and four counts of indecent assault The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, told Tune that the length of time which had elapsed between the offences and the cases being brought to court meant that the hearing was “highly unusual”.

Tune’s defence representative asked the judge for a longer adjournment than normal until sentencing took place, to allow the technicalities of the case to be explored.

Before granting Tune bail, Judge Ashurst told him: “You have pleaded guilty to a number of serious offences.

“These events happened a very long time ago indeed, but they nonetheless remain serious.”

The judge told Tune that the fact he was asking for reports to be carried before sentencing and that he was granting the defendant bail were not indications of the type of sentence he would receive.

“These are highly unusual circumstances and great care will have to be given to the nature of any sentence,” the judge said.

Tune will be sentenced on October 18.
