Bishop of Selby to join Street Angels volunteer group

THE Bishop of Selby will be joining volunteer group Street Angels this weekend to help make York a safer place for people on a night out.

On Friday night, the Rt Rev Martin Wallace will join the team to walk the city’s streets providing practical help and a friendly ear to those in vulnerable or difficult situations.

Street Angels, a group of volunteers from churches in the area, take to the streets of York every Friday and Saturday evening.

They offer support to people in need of help or information, such as giving directions to the nearest safe place to stay, or walking a girl on her own to a bus stop and waiting with her until her bus arrives.

They also look out for the homeless, teenagers drinking in the street and individuals on an evening out who have lost their friends.

Bishop Wallace said: “The Street Angels are people who really make a difference in their city. This project has now trained 55 volunteers from York churches and I think it’s wonderful that they are willing to express their faith in a practical way.”

The Rev Chris Cullwick, leader of York Chaplaincy and one of the founders of Street Angels, said: “Our volunteers identify people in vulnerable situations.

“Street Angels are there to care for those in need, to provide a listening ear and to be a safe and approachable person.

“We’re really delighted that Bishop Martin will be joining us on Friday evening and experiencing our work.”
