Government spending cuts campaigners take to York's Bar Walls

A GROUP of York campaigners took to the city walls yesterday to campaign against spending cuts being made by the coalition government.

York Stop The Cuts – Right To Work group marched with banners along the City Walls overlooking Station Road and Rougier Street to make their voice heard.

The group, which includes people who will be directly affected by the cuts, such as workers for voluntary organisations, public sector workers as well as other political parties, are also organising a trip to campaign at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham on October 3.

Campaigner Sophie Shaw said: “These cuts are unacceptable because they’re hitting the poorest hardest, while the banks are bailed out and big businesses getaway with tax evasion.”

Nowhere else to put this. Quite interesting that the BBC/Experian report on the effects of cutbacks on local authorities doesn't give the Press cause for a moan-fest.

I approve of their protests. Double dip recession is on its way because of the cuts! Ask Middlesborough, Redcar and Sunderland what they think.

Yep! I listened to the news on radio2 this morning as well.

Said on the radio this morning that the North will get absolutely hammered by the Tory cuts in comparison with the South. Well, well, well, what a surprise! Why don't the electorate ever learn? To think that York Outer has a Tory MP, talk about turkeys voting for Christmas!

Get real folks there is'nt any money, or would you like to pay more, much more Council Tax, much more Income Tax? The pain is coming and it has to come. Whoever is to blame for the debt and budget deficit both have to be reduced. As a nation we are almost BANKRUPT!!

There is a fairer way to balance the government’s books through tackling tax evasion and tax avoidance which costs the UK nearly £100bn a year. You should be asking why no one in government can be bothered to make the resources available at HMRC do this so creating jobs and upholding law and order. This approach would eventually result in tax cuts for all honest people while maintaining essential public services.

Between 1979 and 1997 thanks to the Thatcher / Major government’s devotion to greed is good big business mantra the gap between rich and poor grew. Between 1997 and 2010 the obscene trend continued thanks to Tory Blair and his city obsessed Digby Jones approved policies. Now the coalition is in power we should expect no change. As usual the most vulnerable in our society will suffer whilst the super rich will pay no tax at all and the bailed out bankers will squander their tax funded bonuses. Rip off Britain is alive and well and the ordinary hard working man and woman will be left to pick up the bill. Oh and just in case you think that the current pain is worth the price, I’d just like to point out that according to the coalitions own forecasts Britain will be half a trillion pounds further in debt by the next election.

Yes redr, let's get rid of all those naughty "big businesses". Clear Nestle and Aviva out of York, we'll see who's laughing then. Big businesses mean big numbers of jobs.

The country was hit hard by the recession because we'd spent too much and borrowed too much, now we've got no money, these people's supposed answer is that we should recover by spending and borrowing, doing exactly the same thing as what got us into trouble. How unimaginative.

@GM85:

As pointed out by Joseph Stiglitz in yesterday's Telegraph (a hotbed of communism if ever there was one), these austerity measures are likely to make matters worse rather than better: http://www.telegraph

Firstly I never mentioned big business so the remainder of that sarcastic gibberish is pointless. I did however mention tax avoidance something you never answered or did you forget? The country was hit hard by recession because the global financial overlords had behaved utterly irresponsibly and lost all sense of reality. Their total greed in their pursuit of something for nothing was what caused the meltdown. As for your assertion that, these people believe we should spend and borrow more, who are you talking about? It’s certainly not my position. What we should do is ensure the super rich who pay no tax should be forced to do so. Middle class benefits should be curtailed and the least well off should benefit. A good old fashioned redistribution of wealth argument if you like.

It's Middlesbrough, not Middlesborough. Everyone gets it wrong - including the clerk back in 1830 who spelt it incorrectly (without the extra 'o') when it was entered into the town registry for the first time. Which is why it's now spelt Middlesbrough.

I think we should just continue letting the bankers and the rich run riot, whilst allowing popular mainstream media (ironically controlled by the rich elite) to blame our ills on immigrants, thus preserving their own privileged status.

Is it Teesside or Teeside?

'Teesside' - because it's either side of the Tees. Working on this principle, York could be 'Ouseside' - as in "Ouseside are you on, anyway?"

York Outer contains a lot of villages largely populated by affluent people who would never dream of voting anything else but Tory. They have nothing in common with the York suburbs that have been lumped into the constituency with them, and which consequently find themselved saddled with a Tory MP who I'm sure a great many of their residents don't want. I certainly don't - I remember only too well the devastation the Tories were happy to inflict on the North the last time they held power. Our elected Tory Boy - the self-styled "working farmer" - has already made a speech endorsing his government's plans to slash public sector employment in the North, which will of course increase the pool of cheap labour available for exploitation by private businesses run by the sort of people the Hon. Julian mixes with at cocktail parties and famers' balls.

I agree about taxation, all must pay! Zero tolerance to tax avoidance. However we will still have to endure cuts.

Boatie: glad you agree about going after tax avoiders, but note that Osbourne only talks about cutting benefit spending, and is reducing already-depleted HMRC staffing.

We should press for MORE tax inspectors, each can pull in many times their own salary.

No, the Cuts are a Con! There are alternatives to cuts in public spending. All the means needed to fund the fiscal deficit without any cuts in public spending in the UK can be found.

Sophie,s right, the Tory's intend to hit the poorest the hardest and the poorest regions in this country are mostly in the North. They wont hit their rich supporters in the South.
I very proud of Sophie she is a very caring person, always has been.
Make sure you all come to the demo against their cuts on the 3rd October in Birmingham.
