The Maltings in Tanners Moat submits plans for two-storey extension

THE owners of an historic York pub are looking to boost their business by building an extension.

An application to create a two-storey addition to The Maltings in Tanners Moat, which has served ale since the 19th century, has been handed in to City of York Council with the aim of providing extra space for customers.

If approved, a new smoking area will be created on a vacant patch of land between the pub and insurance firm Aviva’s Wellington Row base, together with more seats inside the building and a new kitchen.

In a planning statement submitted to the council, the pub’s agents, W R Dunn & Co, said: “The proposed extension provides an ideal opportunity to promote the growth of an established family-run business, adding value and contributing to the local economy.

“It will allow the pub to expand the commercial floor area and provide enhanced accommodation more suitable for a 21st-century public house with heritage dating back to the 19th century.

“The proposed addition will improve the east elevation of The Maltings and the currently vacant site visually, both from street level and from Lendal Bridge.”

The firm said the extension would be built in a style which would complement the existing pub and remove the need for smokers to stand in Tanners Moat.

Meanwhile, Punch Pub Company has also submitted an application to create an outdoor drinking area at the front of The Ainsty, in Boroughbridge Road, saying the three decked zones would be placed at a point which will not cause noise problems for neighbouring residents.

The council is expected to make a decision on both the proposed pub schemes next month.

Perhaps the owners can find time to amend their mispelt A board outside, which says "Now your wasting drinking time". "your" should read "you're" ie an abbreviated "you are."

First of all I occasionally drink in this pub and think Im reasonably well qualified to comment. yes the drinks are not cheap but you truly get what you pay for in this pub and that is a variety of tasty ales and ciders which are all well kept. No cheap fizzy gas fuelled lager at £1 a pint in this pub.Nothing wrong with spending a bit of money on 3 or 4 pints of decent beer than getting 10 pints of urine at £1.50 a pint. Good home cooked food, a clean pub and nice atmposhere with no bad langauage, blaring music or riff raff kicking off. The staff are pleasant and the landlord in my eyes(paying customer) is extremely popular with the customers hence why its so busy and putting plans forward for extensions-. Silly comments about the landlord make me laugh as its brave slagging people off behind a computer screen, get to know him and you'll realise he has a heart of gold. Nice to see a business expecially a pub doing well in York and not closing, hopefully The Maltings will get there extension.

If the extension was made private and not part of the licence premises would people be allowed to take their drinks there and smoke?

I like the Maltings - nice real ales and scrumpy ciders! And the land lord is neither hard nor does he think he is. Now his mother in law who actually owns the pub - there's a force to be reckoned with!

In my experience of going in The Maltings over the years I have found it a cliquey snobbish pub. I have been stood at the bar for ages and some 'regular' just pops in and gets served straight away. I have turned up at the place with 3 or 4 lads and been turned away by the landlord in a rude and arrogant manner. Oh and for you infomation - I am a paid up member of C.A.M.R.A so don't patronise me!!

That would never happen in the Beagle would it...."You are not from round here are you" attitude.
If you are a paid up member of CAMRA you would appreciate the quality and choice of ales on offer even if you dont like the ambience.
Stick to your fizzy **** water and wkd in your beloved Beagle.

The Maltings is full of old signs, yet the one on the Gents' is handwritten. I'd have thought an old 'Gents' sign would be really easy to find, but apparently not. Perhaps they should re-position the 'venereal disease' sign from the bar.

Hey Piaggio,
I remember when the beagle first opened...well almost as i was 2 !!!. My dad Barry "beagle" stickney would of served you. Sadly passed away now. It was a good pub back then but i must agree with others on here now though as the pub has gone downhill since. I took my dad back in there when it was the 25th anniversary of it opening and you could tell then just how much it had changed.

As for the maltings from what i remember of shaun he is a good lad, although though the comments made about the extension been built so that it fits with the rest of the building might be worrying... if i remember correctly the last time i saw it the pub was painted black, so does this mean that there will be a big black block appearing there ???.

The Maltings

Fantastic and varied range of reasonably-priced ales, food plentiful, great value for money and always high quality, staff a great laugh, landlord a friendly bloke with a wicked sense of humour. Never any trouble. Not full of loud and foul-mouthed people.

Speaking as one of the regulars, I for one would welcome the extension.
The only thing that amazes me about the place is that it isn't still winning all the awards and seems to have been largely forgotten about by the organisations that issue them. Without doubt one of the best if not the best pub in York.
