Residents sought for Auden House social housing development

PEOPLE from across York are being invited to apply for apartments in the city’s first “extra care” development.

The £6 million Auden House social housing development, off Cemetery Road, will provide 41 apartments for rent for the over-55s when it opens early next year.

The “tiered” development will enable people to live an independent lifestyle in their own homes. Each two-bedroom apartment has been designed to be wheelchair friendly and enable residents to receive increasing levels of care as they grow older and their needs change.

The apartments, built on land where “discus” bungalows were originally sited, will be set in private gardens with an on-site bistro, shop, hairdressers and laundry as well as a residents’ lounge.

The initiative is being developed through a partnership with York Housing Association, City of York Council and Southdale and Tees Valley Housing.

Christine Storrs, the chief executive of York Housing Association, said it would enable residents to receive daily care tailored to their needs in the comfort of their home.

She said: “It will appeal to people who find that because of age, frailty or disability that they need someone to help with daily activities such as washing, dressing, getting a meal and getting out to be involved in social and community, life while still leading an independent lifestyle.
