Residents sought for Auden House social housing development

PEOPLE from across York are being invited to apply for apartments in the city’s first “extra care” development.

The £6 million Auden House social housing development, off Cemetery Road, will provide 41 apartments for rent for the over-55s when it opens early next year.

The “tiered” development will enable people to live an independent lifestyle in their own homes. Each two-bedroom apartment has been designed to be wheelchair friendly and enable residents to receive increasing levels of care as they grow older and their needs change.

The apartments, built on land where “discus” bungalows were originally sited, will be set in private gardens with an on-site bistro, shop, hairdressers and laundry as well as a residents’ lounge.

The initiative is being developed through a partnership with York Housing Association, City of York Council and Southdale and Tees Valley Housing.

Christine Storrs, the chief executive of York Housing Association, said it would enable residents to receive daily care tailored to their needs in the comfort of their home.

She said: “It will appeal to people who find that because of age, frailty or disability that they need someone to help with daily activities such as washing, dressing, getting a meal and getting out to be involved in social and community, life while still leading an independent lifestyle.

“We are now inviting applications for tenants, and people interested can talk to us at the Over-50s Fair being organised by York Older People’s Assembly at York Guildhall between 10am and 4pm on September 14, or they can contact Judi Dove on 01904 551219, judi.dove@york.gov.uk, or Melanie Fletcher, 01904 551223, melanie.fletcher@york.gov.uk”

This sounds like a really good idea, but why keep it for older people when there are also younger disabled people who would benefit just as much from this kind of flexible care and support?

That is the worst artist’s impression I have ever seen! Where are the palm trees, the green grass and happy smiling bikini ladies throwing beach balls back and forth? Sack that artist at once!
