York pub set to be demolished

LAST orders look to have been called at a York pub after a developer unveiled plans to demolish it and build houses on the site.

The White Rose in Cornlands Road, Acomb, was closed and put up for sale by Admiral Taverns last October, and has become increasingly run-down since. On Saturday, one former landlady said she feared it could be set on fire.

Property developer Neil Farrar, of West Yorkshire, has now drawn up plans to knock the pub down and build six semi-detached bungalows with garages.

Mr Farrar’s planning agent Terry Brighthouse said: “The property is unoccupied and the condition of the building is rapidly deteriorating due to vandalism.”

Matt Grant, chairman of the York branch of pub and beer lobby group Camra, said: “It’s a shame to see such an historic pub go, but it has been neglected over recent years so it is not a huge surprise unfortunately.”

According to Hugh Murray’s Directory of York Pubs, the White Rose was licensed in 1957. It was a popular community pub for many years, but Admiral Taverns placed it on the market last year, saying it no longer fitted with their other properties.

Local councillor Steve Galloway said yesterday: “I am pleased that progress is now being made on dealing with a site which was beginning to look rundown and had become a target for vandals.

“If the bungalow scheme is agreed then it will provide much- needed specialist accommodation which is likely to appeal to mature people.”

He said the site benefited from shops opposite, and a frequent bus service, and was near Cornlands Road Park, Bachelor Hill and the new Energise sports and leisure centre.

City of York Council is considering Mr Farrar’s planning application, and hopes to make a decision by October 21.

"such a historic pub"

Are we looking at the correct photograph then?... Looks like one of those horrible 60's buildings to me.

even using the site for burying highly toxic nuclear waste would have been an improvement on what was there before, so anything's ok really.
what about redeveloping the king willy?

What about the Cornlands Road lads? The Thoresby Road Lads? The Tennant Road Sugar Hill Crew? Eh Eh Eh. As long as they don't knock down my pub I don't give a toss. And what's this beardy C.A.M.R.A. bore on about? Bet he has never even been in the place. If he did he would spoil his cords with hot melty SLUSH.

Im shocked this is actually making the news, this pub was nothing more than a dump and was an eyesore before any vandals went near, it should have been knocked down years ago. Yes it might be old and therefore 'historic' but it will never make a profitable worth while business for anyone as it only ever has and only ever will house the local unemployed.

Have you ever been in there? Have you sat at the bar and guzzled 6 or 7 pints of SLOP? I bet you haven't - I bet your the type of bloke who sits in The Doormouse reading an Enid Blyton novel and supping some nasty real ALE.

1957 - hardly historic, another of the ghastly community pubs that are a haven for drunks, thieves and other lowlife. The only people who'll buy houses on there will be out of towners who find a problem selling in a few years as none of us want to live in a sink hole estate. York is one of the only places I know where they managed to build social housing estates between each private one, and now they are run down the problems spill onto the neighbouring private estates.

Good luck to the building firm who take this on trying to keep their equipment and supplies safe!! haha

All these negative comments....I have great memories of The White Rose...I remember when Charles & Diana got married-we had great fun in there! I also remember the Off-Licence SHop at the front...we used to go there & get our 10p mixtures...geez, maybe I'm just getting old...but try & remember the good things in life...it is only THE PEOPLE who create BAD memories as well as the people who create GOOD memories! Life is all about CHOICES my friends! Remember that!

I wonder if the bloke has worked out yet what a dump the area is and that cyc will steal half of what he builds to house chavs therefore making the rest unsaleable. cant see this happening too soon somehow . seems to me perfect opportunity for cyc to buy it themselves and build afforable/ rentable homes the honest way without theft and bribary from builders

IF it was such a historic pub, it would have a preservation order on it, too late now!
After last weeks story the developer has come clean & announced his intentions, he obviously WAS waiting to the local yobs to firebomb it but now.....
any fire would look suspicious on him!

How would you know? You probably have never been in there. I bet you live somewhere like Wiggington and slurp Pimms and eat olives.

This area is not a "dump" or a "sink estate". Like many areas of social housing in York the general environment is unrecognisably better than it was a decade ago.
Many have bought their former Council homes and spent large amounts of money improving them. The Council has also invested heavily with the community having the benefit of easy access to facilities like the Energise pool and sports centre.
The new York High School has just achieved some of the best exam results of any school in the York area (which in turn makes it one of the most successful in the country)
In every area there are some residents who don't respect the community. These small numbers should not be allowed to tarnish the image of a complete neighbourhood.

charles - no one of any good breeding would consume olives with Pimms.

hey whats wrong with the king willy? have you been in lately one of the best pubs in acomb, why not give it a try.
maybe you dont know your way as you seem to be misguided in your comments. As for the white rose in its day was a great pub only a few no hopers let the area down but the the area is improving all the time.so give it a go vist Acomb and you will see and experience a great community atmosphere in all the local watering holes especially the king willy.

I was brought up in Acomb and still enjoy going back there. Okay there are a few morons - but everywhere has that. For the most part I'm always struck by how warm people are and the friendly service in the shops. Don't live there now, but I suppose I'm saying that when I return, I'm always reminded why growing up in Acomb was a happy time.

Where the White rose is and Cornlands Road shops, it is indeed a dump. I would not like to be female or a pensioner walking past here on a dusky evening. When was the last time you walked down this street on a night time Steve?

Well said lizzie I have lived most of my 7 decades of life in Acomb, sad that people give it such a bad name, never had a problem with crime or morons.
Can't believe the amount of misguided snobs who post on here (maybe 'legoland' people of Haxby Wiggington and strensall ).
Seems like The White rose has had its day,it was a nice place to be on a weekend back in the 70's,not been in for a long time so can't comment on its customers, but assume it fell to lack of use like the 40 or so pubs in Britain that disappear each week.
