LAST orders look to have been called at a York pub after a developer unveiled plans to demolish it and build houses on the site.
The White Rose in Cornlands Road, Acomb, was closed and put up for sale by Admiral Taverns last October, and has become increasingly run-down since. On Saturday, one former landlady said she feared it could be set on fire.
Property developer Neil Farrar, of West Yorkshire, has now drawn up plans to knock the pub down and build six semi-detached bungalows with garages.
Mr Farrar’s planning agent Terry Brighthouse said: “The property is unoccupied and the condition of the building is rapidly deteriorating due to vandalism.”
Matt Grant, chairman of the York branch of pub and beer lobby group Camra, said: “It’s a shame to see such an historic pub go, but it has been neglected over recent years so it is not a huge surprise unfortunately.”
According to Hugh Murray’s Directory of York Pubs, the White Rose was licensed in 1957. It was a popular community pub for many years, but Admiral Taverns placed it on the market last year, saying it no longer fitted with their other properties.
Local councillor Steve Galloway said yesterday: “I am pleased that progress is now being made on dealing with a site which was beginning to look rundown and had become a target for vandals.
“If the bungalow scheme is agreed then it will provide much- needed specialist accommodation which is likely to appeal to mature people.”
He said the site benefited from shops opposite, and a frequent bus service, and was near Cornlands Road Park, Bachelor Hill and the new Energise sports and leisure centre.
City of York Council is considering Mr Farrar’s planning application, and hopes to make a decision by October 21.

Im shocked this is actually making the news, this pub was nothing more than a dump and was an eyesore before any vandals went near, it should have been knocked down years ago. Yes it might be old and therefore 'historic' but it will never make a profitable worth while business for anyone as it only ever has and only ever will house the local unemployed.

"such a historic pub" Are we looking at the correct photograph then?... Looks like one of those horrible 60's buildings to me.

What a dump, made The Beagle look like The Savoy. The local druggies must be heart broken.

even using the site for burying highly toxic nuclear waste would have been an improvement on what was there before, so anything's ok really. what about redeveloping the king willy?

This area is not a "dump" or a "sink estate". Like many areas of social housing in York the general environment is unrecognisably better than it was a decade ago. Many have bought their former Council homes and spent large amounts of money improving them. The Council has also invested heavily with the community having the benefit of easy access to facilities like the Energise pool and sports centre. The new York High School has just achieved some of the best exam results of any school in the York area (which in turn makes it one of the most successful in the country) In every area there are some residents who don't respect the community. These small numbers should not be allowed to tarnish the image of a complete neighbourhood.

I was brought up in Acomb and still enjoy going back there. Okay there are a few morons - but everywhere has that. For the most part I'm always struck by how warm people are and the friendly service in the shops. Don't live there now, but I suppose I'm saying that when I return, I'm always reminded why growing up in Acomb was a happy time.
