Fears for future of White Rose pub in Cornlands Road, Acomb

AN EMPTY Acomb pub is once again at the centre of a plea to return it to community use amidst fears of the property falling victim to arsonists.

A former landlady of the White Rose pub in Cornlands Road described the building as an “eyesore” and said its appearance would put people off moving to the area.

Barbara Anderson took over the running of the pub 11 years ago and stayed for four-and-a-half years.

She said during that time the pub had been full of customers and believes it could be again.

Last month The Press reported how the pub had fallen prey to vandals who had smashed windows, attempted to steal lead from the roof and broken a boiler.

Mrs Anderson, 56, said: “I looked through the windows last night and I know kids have been in because I saw smashed tables.

“Are the owners just waiting for some of the bored youngsters to burn it to the ground because that is what will happen next?

“Eyesores like this attract the bored youngsters from all areas to it. I know myself, I used to love to go into derelict houses when I was younger, just to see how other people lived. The only difference was that in my day we didn’t add to the dereliction.

“Nowadays, it’s fun for these kids to make the things worse. It’s degrading for the residents of the Acomb area to have to put up with this eyesore.

“Anyone new coming into Acomb from the Cornlands Road area would certainly be put off wanting to take up residence here once they see the White Rose in the state of disrepair that it is in now.”

She believed anyone who bought the pub outright as a free house would be able to run a profitable business.

The former owners of the pub, Admiral Taverns, said they had put the pub up for sale last October because it did not fit with its portfolio. They said the pub had been sold but were unable to say who the new owner was due to legal reasons.

What's the point in the story if it's been sold already? And if Barbara Anderson think's the place is so fantastic and will be profitable as a free house why doesn't she buy it?

Fair enough in the 70's it was lads pub where lads used to urinate on the pool table and stamp on bags of crisps but if they re-opened the hole now it would only be of purpose to trashy single mothers with their poxy tattoos and bags full of farmfoods muck along with their dirty sticky hooligan chilldren.

It such a shame as it was such a magnifcent building to look at before it closed down!!! yeah right they should just burn it down, as for putting people off moving into the area i would suggest this is more to do with the scummy little chavs who hang around outside in the bus stop and throw eggs at your car when you drive past as this is what happened to me the other week!! c**ts!!!

Why do you see the need to give these people ideas?

After reading this I can't believe my security word is "room-heat"!!!

I hope they were free range eggs. That sort of thing would never happen round Foxwood yet it gets so a bad press

Simple...sell decent ale at reasonable prices, Bingo. How difficult is it? Whilst there is a decline in rubbish beer sales, the small breweries are increasing sales big style...a no brainer. Sadly the pub owning world is run by idiots and, I suppose, accountants, who plainly have absolutely no concept of the word quality...very sad

The pub has been sold to a developer and he expects to submit a planning application shortly which would lead to bungalows being built on the site.

The yolk was a creamy colour when i cleaned off which would suggest they were off the caged birds. Free range eggs tend to have a much yellow colour to them plus when Sean inspeted the mess who def identified caged and he would know! I would recommend goose to be as good as any if not the best. I dont know maybe i should move down to East London like you im sure you dont get half of the trouble we get round here???!!

Hackney is a sea of calm compared to say Tedder Road. But if eggs were to be thrown I expect they'd be organic quail. Going back to the White Rose thing it seems a shame no pub can prosper on Cornlands - there's not a lot of other pubs in immediate vicinity is there?

Several questions. If the locals are calling for this to be returned to community use, it never was! (community means, hall NOT a profit making pub!). If that is what the community wanted they should have badgered the council to buy it! Barn door & horese bolted come to mind! An eyesore? YES but made that way by the local Yobs!
The owner is just waiting for the local yobs to burn the place to the ground, of course he is, ALL he wants is the land to squeeze in as many houses as possible. He does not want to waste money in demolishing the old place! (& if he has it insured, he wins double!)

This pub can be secured very easy using adhoc uk www.adhoc.eu
adhoc can install property guardians into the building until it's put back in use i suggest the new owners get intouch call york branch on 01904 652594 if people are present in the building then these issues will disapear!
