YORK’S newly-refurbished central library has performed well since it reopened, despite a national drop in visitors to libraries.
York Explore, which reopened in May following a £540,000 revamp, has welcomed up to 10,000 people each week, and almost 2,000 new members have joined.
A spokesperson for City of York Council said that figures had also risen since August, with about 2,000 visitors every day, an increase of 25 per cent on last year.
Fiona Williams, head of libraries and heritage at City of York Council, said the figures were encouraging.
“The figures speak for themselves and show just how popular York Explore is with residents and visitors. We hope the number of visitors will keep increasing,” she said.
