A PRISONER from York collapsed and died of a heart problem shortly after taking part in a weightlifting competition, an inquest heard.
Ashley Done, 21, of Hilton Avenue, York, was being held at Deerbolt young offenders institution in County Durham, where he was serving a sentence for supplying heroin.
PC Jacqueline Sirrell, County Durham coroner’s officer, told an inquest yesterday Done had been recalled to the institution after breaching the conditions of his release on licence.
He died in his cell despite efforts to revive him on December 28 after complaining of breathlessness.
Home Office pathologist Dr Nigel Cooper concluded that Done died of thrombosis due to atheroma – furring of the coronary arteries – a condition more common in people at least 20 years older.
County Durham coroner Andrew Tweddle directed the jury to return a verdict of death by natural causes.
