UFO sighted in sky over Selby, North Yorkshire

THERE’S something out there – and it's flying over Selby.

A local man has reported how he saw a UFO in the sky over the district.

Writing on the forum of website abovetopsecret.com, a resident of Whitley has told how he saw something in the sky on Tuesday night.

Calling himself Darkjedig, the man, who used to live in Florida, said on the forum: “I am just wanting to see if anyone in the North Yorkshire area in England, has seen a UFO tonight.

“I have been seeing a lot lately and have tried to film them on my phone camera, but they don’t show up.

“Tonight however, I saw one while sitting in my bedroom.

“Around 9.30pm, I noticed a bright white light slowly floating past my window.

“It was silent, had no flashing lights, and was low for a plane.

“I have not seen a plane go past there before and although Doncaster/Sheffield airport has planes coming from the west at night, they are much further away.

“I got my phone out and went to film it hoping it would show up.

“I opened the velux window as wide as I could and I managed to film a little of it, but it was hard to get it to show up and was hard to tell if it was moving.

“I watched for another five to ten seconds and it went up at a 75 degree angle, to the left of two stars and disappeared.

“The thing literally went into space. I was stunned to say the least.”

Another subscriber to the website said he had also seen a flashing light in the sky above Hemingbrough at about 9pm.

Suggestions from other people that the UFO was actually a Chinese lantern or the International Space Station (ISS) were dismissed.

Darkjedig said: “The object was definitely not the ISS.

“It was much lower than a plane usually is when they approach from my left side. This is above a tree line that runs perpendicular to the A19, which is behind my house.

“The object was a bright white light slowly floating horizontally until it shot up quickly and disappeared into the sky. It was much too fast and not orange for a lantern and without a doubt too low initially to be the ISS.”

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said they had had no reports of UFOs from members of the public.

Funny this article should appear today, as last night I also saw something weird in the skies over York. I was standing in Grosvenor Road and saw 10 red/orange lights in the sky moving over Clifton in formation. Then, when they had passed, another 10 appeared, again moving in formation at a reasonable speed. I stopped a mate of mine who was passing so he could see it as I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We stood there bemused as to what it could be. It could have been planes (do they usually have orange lights?) but 20 planes in the sky at 11.30pm? The thought struck me that we were being invaded by the Russians or something! And, before you say it, no I wasn't drunk! Certainly freaked me out, how weird.

I saw a cartoon of a crop circle in the shape of a bicycle. Two passers by scratching their heads with one saying "Do you think they're trying to tell us something..."

If there is true alien life out there why would they want to see us? If you look at our leaders as our representatives of an entire species you can understand why they don't want to talk to us yet.

You mean the large number of chinese lanterns that were released somewhere in the city centre last night?
Honestly.

So, the press have made a story out of something that has appeared on a message board? Jesus, they are really scraping the barrel here. Is it a slow news day, or is there no "roadworks misery" stories today?

If I was looking for intelligent life, I wouldn't start in Selby...

More to the point - why would aliens travel across the galaxy just to come to Selby? York's only a few miles down the road and far nicer.

Yeah, to get off our arses and into our cars.

There are between one and four hundred billion stars in the Milky Way our home galaxy. And our galaxy is one of an estimated one hundred billion others. Science is now confirming that as expected many of these stars have planetary systems similar to our own. So why would anyone believe that our insignificant little rock is the only place that supports life? As for little green men paying us a visit; I suspect if they were advanced enough to travel such huge distances they’d have better things to do than visit our planet. I’m just hoping it’s the Volcans that get here first though I understand a Klingon or two frequent the Beagle.

I'm sure what this man saw was the International Space Station. I know this because a photographer friend recorded a long exposure image of it on Tuesday and posted in on Facebook.

It is almost impossible to determine the altitude of a "light in the sky" without sophisticated equipment. Even if the object is seen in relation to known horizon features, it is still very difficult. A "big" light might actually emanate from something quite modest only a few hundred yards away, or, equally, from something the size of a double-decker bus orbiting the Earth. Similarly, a very small light could be firefly you could reach up and catch in your hand ... or a distant planet!

Regarding these recent sightings: if what you see is a whitish light following a straight trajectory at a steady, fairly brisk speed, it is likely to be a satellite of some kind; if it's a reddish-orange light moveing slowly and perhaps eratically (depending on local wind conditions) it will be a Chinese Lanthorn.

Aircraft usually carry red and green port and starboard lights like ships, as well as an assortment of steady and/or flashing white lights, depending on size and type.

Shooting stars and meteors move so fast it's usually pretty obvious what they are!

Of course, none of the above precludes the possibility of alien spacecraft ... whether we actually see them or not.

If they had landed and said to the people in Selby take us to your leader they'd have got a better answer then in York. After all would you want Galloway or Waller to be the first people to meet aliens? Unless it was a take away

OK, time to put the rumours regarding the lights on thursday night to bed....

50 lanterns were set off by my events company at around 11.30pm for what was a wonderful wedding held at the Castle Museum. They drifted off over the Court House towards Clifton. About 30 were set off at once and then the rest a little later. They did look spectacular over York and I was worried about what would be in the press next day! (Hopefully no unexplained fires!)

I was in a lay-by by the Ramada Jarvis hotel with a few friends of mine and a client and we were suddenly startled by these lanterns in the sky, thank you for explaining.

No, not for hay!

Nor are we insured for something that happened prior to one of our events either! ...oh and before you ask, We don't have a flux capacitor either! DOH!

There are claims, including that of the late Philip J. Corso, that extraterrestrials have time machine technology. If that claim is true, it could well explain why we can never quite pin ET down with solid evidence of his existence. Every time humans do pin ET down, his comrades go back in time and undo the embarrassing event that revealed ET to be unquestionably real. With this time travel advantage that aliens have, there really is no way we can prove they exist if they don't want us to.
