York 50+Festival programme launched

THE programme for York’s sixth festival for the over 50s has been launched – and it once again features a huge range of events, from laughter workshops to line dancing.

The 50+Festival, promoted by the York Older People’s Assembly, will start with a major information fair to be held at the Guildhall from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday, September 14.

Participants at the fair will range from City Screen and Mecca Bingo to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, York and District MIND, and OLGA (Older Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans Association). Others include York Carers Centre, Older Citizens Advocacy York (OCAY), York Osteoporosis Society and The Alzheimers Society.

The full festival, featuring dozens of events across the city, runs from Saturday, September 25, to Sunday, October 3.

The activities include a computer skills for life day at York College, an Alzheimer’s memory walk at York Racecourse, and a model boat regatta involving York Model Boat Club at Rowntree Park.

There will be free legal clinics at Ingrams Solicitors at York Business Park, kundalini yoga and dru yoga at Club Chambers in Museum Street, and health walks at Rawcliffe Bar country park.

There will also be a “get ready for winter day” at the Folk Hall in New Easrwick, an information fair aimed at helping older people prepare for the coming winter, including a “sloppy slipper” exchange, comfortable clothing for sale and blood pressure checks.

Other activities include:

• Young at heart swimming at Energise in Acomb

• Line dancing at Osbaldwick Village Hall

• An open day at York Blind and Partially Sighted Society in Holgate Road

• Tea He He! A laughter workshop at Grays Court.

For full details of the festival, programmes are available from libraries and other key city outlets, or go to yorkassembly.org.uk or phone festival co-ordinator, Sue Lister on 01904 488870.

don't they realise a 50 year old today was born in 1960!! mods and rockers, punk, glam rock, drug culture of each decade, madchester, beatles, poll tax riots, race riots, football hooligans, booze and binge culture is all part of their history, and they come up alzheimers walk, bingo, alzheimers walk, comfortable clothing and alzheimers walk ! think they were planning for an 80+ festival.
