York bus services set for review

A REVIEW of York’s local bus services could be launched to ensure passengers do not lose out when operators sign new contracts next year.

City of York Council leader Andrew Waller is expected to rubber-stamp a recommendation to look at the area’s public transport network after a 529-name petition was drawn up calling for fare freezes, an end to service cuts by First York and a fresh analysis of routes.

The review, which will be discussed at a meeting next week, would be aimed at ensuring villages on the edge of York have sufficient access to buses, with most of the contracts for running services in the city coming up for renewal next autumn.

A report by the authority’s principal transport planner, Andrew Bradley, said the council only had control over the area the review would look at, though it attempted to influence decisions over fares and service reductions.

Coun James Alexander, the council’s Labour group leader, who organised the petition, said: “Increases in fares have coincided with a fall in bus patronage of 600,000 people between 2008/09 and 2009/10. Price and quality are contributing factors to congestion as many of the falling patronage will have got in their cars."

You all know don't you that a number of early morning journeys throughout the City on routes such as the 1, 5, 10 and others are set to face the axe soon (next month I believe) as well as late buses to Wiggington? Oh you didn't, oops, what a clanger I have dropped, seems like First didn't want you to know til it was too late to kick up a fuss. Anyhow, take action now, block off the entrance to Firts Yorks depot so they can't run their poxy buses and loose money, let's kick Firts out of York, Pullman should run all services, after all they came to the rescue on the 10 route running journeys Firts said didn't make them enough money. What greedy b******s!

Please, please reduce prices. We took the car into York last friday because who would pay £9.60 return tickets for 3 adults when they have a car! And before you say we should have walked or cycled my mother in law can't walk the 3 1/2 miles! Surely the city centre economy would improve if we could all get there cheaply

Get rid of First and their useless lazy drivers .

Students and staff at the university may be pleased to know that from later this month, Pullman are extending their university service to the railway station, and increasing the frequency to every 15 minutes. Return fares will remain at £2.
.
Bring on the revolution. First have already lost a big chunk of the market share they used to have (most Pullman and Transdev routes used to be run by First). Where you have a choice between First and another operator, use the other operator's service!

I assume First York do read these comments made by their customers? I wonder when they will have the guts to break silence and comment?

Here is my business plan to encourrage more people to use bus services run by First in York...

Have a proper timetable and stick to it.
Clean your buses.
Cheer up your drivers.
Reduce your prices (it's cheaper to park your car in York).

russeboy: First drivers are on rubbish wages, and mostly hope to transfer to Coastliner and other operators who pay better.

Tiredness: to be fair, the info is on their website, along with new timetables. That said, they haven't exactly shouted about it!

Ah, so it's been confirmed that these changes will take place on 5th September, but hang on a moment, haven't heard much about this til I looked on the website and no doubt about it they'll be many passengers who don't look on first's website much if not at all. I only heard about the changes originally through a driver talking to another driver! How's about First talking to it's passengers through adverts and leaflets rather than just off chance driver talk and the web alone!

I don't get the bus because I refuse to be ripped off. I live too far to walk - I do bike but it's not always practical if i'm carrying a lot of stuff. So I go in the car and park at a friends house who lives near town.

The council bleats on about how greener we should be and I'm fully onboard with this; however; when it's cheaper to drive it's just not going to work!

First should adopt the Oyster Card way of living and the government should link all transport up so the cards can be used anywhere!
