New St Maurice’s Road hotel would ‘reduce richness’ of view for York Bar Walls walkers

FRESH fears have been raised over plans for a new hotel next to York’s Bar Walls.

Janine Riley, City of York Council’s conservation officer, said the proposed hotel in St Maurice’s Road would be out of keeping with the surrounding area and would “unacceptably harm” the setting and views.

As previously reported in The Press, developers want to build a 26-bed hotel at the site of the Keystones pub car-park, opposite the existing Monk Bar Hotel.

Developers say the scheme would create 50 jobs, but it has drawn criticism from local residents and conservation groups.

In a written submission to colleagues in the planning department, Ms Riley said the panoramic view from the Walls of diverse buildings would be replaced by a single view of the new building, which would “reduce the richness of the townscape experience”.

"would be out of keeping with the surrounding area and would “unacceptably harm” the city"

sums the council up perfectly

If the council allow this application then there is no hope for the city. Enough damage, such as Arclight, has been caused to the tourist aspects of the city without blocking in one of the outstanding features of York.

No way should this be allowed.

THis sounds like an excellent and well balanced proposal. Conservation officers have a role to play, however their opinions are far from the be all and end all and there are many factors to consider.

I hope it goes ahead.

Can't work out the logic of the conservation officers comment ? She says that the proposed hotel would block out the panoramic views from the bar walls, but what do you see at the moment ? ........ the Monk Bar Hotel !! Further down the St Maurices Road you see the council's multi-storey car park. What is all the fuss about ? Maybe there is a clue in the title......... it's all about conserving..... in this case conserving a view, but, is it one that is really worth conserving ????

But have you seen what there're planning to put there? It actually looks like a multi-storey car park! It's flat roofed & higher than the walls and all the other buildings around. It's appalling.
I know the the Monk Bar Hotel is nothing to drool over - but it's a heck of a lot better than having the back of this monstrosity right in your face.

Sounds right up COYC's street. Is this not a perfect description of what poo studios/carcuncle HQ would have looked like?

Exactly - should turn it down on the 'taking the pish' basis alone.
