SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Ben Dingwall was in for a surprise when he came face-to-face with a live tarantula at Appleton Roebuck Primary School.
Throughout the summer holidays, schools in the York area have been offering a wide range of activities for children, young people and families.
A number of families took part in Creature Features activities at Riverside Primary School, in Tadcaster, and at Appleton Roebuck. The families met a variety of interesting creatures, including a rabbit, guinea pig, a rat and a snake.
Yesterday, families took part in a Life Through A Lens science activity day at Archbishop of York Primary School, in Bishopthorpe.
The event allowed families to create slides and examine a number of items using microscopes. The family fun day was designed to encourage teamwork, while promoting an interest in science.
Keith Aspden, partnership co-ordinator for the Tadcaster family of schools, said: “We are really pleased to offer these extended services for families.
“Over the summer holidays, more than 400 children will be taking part in our activities.”
Events in the upcoming weeks include family visits to Lightwater Valley and Success Into Secondary Transition Days.
