Fire rips through Club Salvation nightclub in George Hudson Street, York

Updated: A FIRE ripped through a York nightclub, devastating the first, second and third floors.
The fire began at Club Salvation, in George Hudson Street, shortly after 4am on Saturday when the venue had closed. An hour earlier, hundreds of people had been dancing in the club.
The blaze began on the first floor open-roofed smoking area and was spotted by head doorman Richard Peel who was nearby. He raised the alarm and the staff members who were in the club were evacuated.
Mark Lawrence, who deals with promotions for Club Salvation, tried to tackle the fire, which he said was in the middle of the smoking area.
He said: “When I got there I got an extinguisher, but there was no chance. The flames were too high and it was too hot.”
Firefighters from York, Acomb, Huntington and Tadcaster were sent to the scene as was an aerial ladder and they used breathing apparatus and hoses.
The road outside was closed and the fire was brought under control by 6.45am, but the wooden outside smoking area on the first floor was gutted as were offices on the second and third floors.
The main part of the club on the ground floor suffered smoke and water damage, but the club’s management team said they hoped to reopen by next Thursday.
Adam Cook, marketing and promotions manager, said: “The best thing was there was nobody hurt and nobody trapped in the building.”
He paid tribute to the firefighters.
He said: “Two firefighters came straight away, they were pretty quick.”
He said the main part of the club on the ground floor needs cleaning, painting and some new carpets but escaped serious damage. He said it would give the club’s management the chance to give it a new look.
He said Club Salvation’s sister venue, BPM, would be opening as usual.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it was investigating the cause of the blaze.

From the photos it seemed like everyone had a very lucky escape for there to have been no injuries. Without wanting to sound like a killjoy, the question now has to be asked if the back yard areas that many pubs and bars have opened up since the smoking ban are really safe. I can think of several in York in which the combination of wooden tables, fabric awnings and in some cases gas-fired patio heaters don't exactly fill me with confidence. All it would take is someone who's had a drink too many to knock one over on a crowded Saturday night...

The less places there are like this the better, would we all not prefer a friendly, clean, crime free city? Binge drinkers are a blight on the NHS, Council and Justice system. Curfew anyone?

Maybe you think we should ban everybody from the city when you want to cycle through, just in case they get in your way.
These people, who are the minority of drinkers, not the majority, are generaly confined to just a few streets, and you know where they are, so dont cycle down there!

If you want to sort out this problem, then look at where over 65% of alcohol is now bought - the supermarkets.
Ask any taxi driver and they will confirm that people are now far drunker on their way into town before even entering a pub than ever before.

BPM offers a great experience for those seeking a good night out with like minded people. It is extremelly well managed and employs many. Sell Alcohol ? yes it does.
To blame these bars themselves for the issues in York City Centre on an evening is as far away from the problem as you can get, and I am so glad the above mentioned posters will never ever be in a position to help solve or reduce these issues.
Personal values, responsibility, and respect, are not handed over to the owners of Supermarkets or bars in exchange for Alcohol.
Some people, just some, dont posess any, or have ever seen the benefits of them in action.
That is the problem, and not the providers of establishments selling the stuff to drink at home or in bars.

Do you really think that if York got rid of all these dodgy bars and clubs that the level of drunken disruption and vomit-stained pavements would not drop like a stone? If you don't allow places where behaving like a d**k is seen as acceptable, people won't behave like that anywhere near as much.

I think you're all missing the point. This fire was not caused by binge drinkers. It was caused by smokers. Cigarettes - as are the majority of fires. A wooden smoking area seems daft. The solution to prevent further risks would be to not allow these venues to have designated 'smoking areas.' I am sure smokers can cope a couple of hours without a cigarette - if they can't then frankly they need help.

Clubs probably generate a bit of trouble from drunken idiots, but then the world is full of idiots and those few aren't the worst. At least they're not trying to impose their blinkered one track world view onto the rest of us. The odd pile of puke is less offensive than hundreds of miles of green lanes!

Do you really think that if the UK got rid of all these roads and motorways that the levels of congestion, pollutipon and car related deaths would NOT drop like a stone? If you dont allow these roads, then people wouldnt drive anywhwere near as much.

The minority of people who act like d**k's will act like d**k's wherever they are, if not in a club then at home with cheap booze from the offy where they are not being watched by doorstaff.
Just because you dont like going to a particular place, it does not have to be banned. I dont like this place much myself but lots of people do, so thats fine by me.

It should be pointed out that there is accommodation adjoining the night club, and thankfully none of those people living there were hurt, or the staff who were still in the building at the time.
I wonder how some of you can sleep at night with spiteful drivel that comes out of your mouths. Although I imagine that you just write this rubbish hiding behind the safety of anonymity with nothing else to occupy your sad little lives.

Reading some of the comments above I conclude that most of you are no better than these so called chavs you seem to want to exterminate.

I agree with a lot of comments on here. The sooner we lose these horrendous dens of chav boozing the sooner the city will lose the louts wrecking the streets in the local area. Sick of these louts breaking windows at 3am, shouting their uneducated booze-fuelled rubbish, followed in tow by their paraletic slags aiming to make an appearance on Jeremy Kyle in the not too distant future. Alcohol is the root of all evil.

Why does the press choose which stories we may comment on? Why censor the discussion on some? I would like to see the discussion on the story about there being no convictions following the travellers site drug raid.
How did the guy with all the heroin get away with it? Presumably the stuff was found on his possession and even had one fingerprint on the jar. If that doesn't do it, then can we assume that to become drug dealers we simply have to keep our stuff in a coffee jar and only touch it with gloves? How did the stuff get there? Are we to assume someone broke in and gave him £10k worth of smack? If so, did he report this offence, or was he just enjoying his coffee?

My answers on a postcard was an opportunity for you to say something constructive instead of banging your drum about Chavs/Ndubz/young people from Tang Hall (and presumably all of the other council estates in the area) etc etc.
I know there are many other activities that people can enjoy that don't involve alcohol. But to suggest that all the young people who socialise in York city centre end up paralytic is very short sighted. It is a very small minority, who sadly ruin it for the rest.

I stand by everything I said as I have the facts, not assumptions. Now let's hope the rest of these drug dens (alcohol is a drug) burn down.....with no one inside, of course, and we get these podgy chavs into a gym or two or at least learn some social responsibility instead of treating the city as a giant toilet.

Over 65% of alcohol bought these days is from the supermarkets, not pubs and clubs. Just look at the amount of beer cans, which are not usually sold in pubs, strewn about the streets.
Without these places do you honestly expect them to drink less? In reality they would drink more at home because it is cheaper. Those who insist on causing problems would then be doing it in residential areas with no doormen or police in the vicinity to atempt to control them.
Of the thousands of people who go out in York every night, only a few cause problems. It would be unfair to stop these people having their fun just because of a few idiots who would not stop being idiots no matter what you do.
