Ethical KitKats fairing so well

YORK confectionery giant Nestlé says it is to expand its Fairtrade links, after its initial switch drew an “overwhelmingly positive” response.
The chocolate firm began using Fairtrade cocoa in four-finger KitKats in January, and says the move has gone down well with shopkeepers and customers.
It is now looking to build relationships with more cooperatives to increase its supply of Fairtrade cocoa and stave off any potential shortages, and is also planning a Fairtrade festive special product for Christmas 2010.
A spokesman for Nestlé said sales had increased in the past six months.
He said: “The response from consumers and retailers of Fairtrade-certified four-finger KitKat has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Over the first six months, not only have we been getting great quality cocoa for KitKat but we have helped to improve the quality of life for many cocoa farmers and their families in the Ivory Coast.”
He said it took time to secure the amount of Fairtrade cocoa needed to get the entire brand certified as Fairtrade, but said efforts to increase supplies were ongoing.
He said: “We will continue to work with Fairtrade to build relationships with additional co-ops to increase the supply from the Ivory Coast and we are delighted that this Christmas, we will have a seasonal Fairtrade Kit Kat product which is the next step on our Fairtrade journey.”

They profit from having connections with Mugabe’s regime that sees 1000s of people killed under his leadership but Nestle are more than happy with this & continue to have connections with him using their farms that Mugabe stole & killed to gain.
Nestle in 2008 refused to attened a meeting in the US to see how multi-national companies around the globe could help but an end to child slavory. Not suprsing when they have been accused of using child slavoury themselves.
The list goes on and on.
Babies die so that Nestle can earn money.

How many more babies will Nestle kill ? How longer will they be happy to profit from the Mugabe regime? How many more children will be forced into child labour?
Ask Nestle - their reply is as always for as long as they are making money they will carry on regardless.
Buying Nestle means babies will die.

Do you check where your clothes are made? Do you check where you footballs etc are made? Do you check for the living conditions of any eggs/milk that you buy?

The worst thing about your post is that just because say primark use slave labour it makes it ok for nestle to aswell. This attitude sucks especially when leeching companies such as nestle like people to think that they are fair and ethical (see above story, last weeks story etc etc) when in reality they are anything but.

Are you saying that at least doing something to make the world a better place for all to live in for everybody is worse than what these companies do?
If it wasn't for people who stood up and voiced their complaints about injustice around the world & did something about it, you wouldn't be enjoying half the luxuries you take for granted every day.

I assume you mean something along the lines of "animal cruelty" either in the conditions they are kept in or the way in which they die. Fair enough. I personally think that is bol-locks, but each to their own.

Just a quick point though. Whilst I don't normally eat McDonalds, many do. A large amount of McDonalds meat, internationally, comes from the ex-rainforest areas of Brazil, which are now enormous cattle ranches. Thousands of people are employed and it is easily said that their lives are improved by having a consistent and reliable income, however at a loss of the rainforest.

My personal belief is that all rainforest should be preserved in the interest of biodiversity. My personal belief is that every citizen of this world deserves the opportunity to work and improve the lives of himself (herself) and his (her) family. Obviously this causes a conflict. Does this mean I never eat McDonalds, as "they are killing the rainforest"? No it doesn't. Does it also mean that McDonalds are actually supporting the lives of many many people? Yes it does. Everything in life in a compromise, and whilst some things that Nestle do are deplorable, some things they do are not...for example the farmers of cocoa in the Ivory Coast whom now have significantly improved conditions to live and work in.

I'm not trying to defend multi-national corporations, as for the most part what they do is exploit those whom are easiest to exploit - those with no choice. But their are 2 sides to every coin. You don't buy Nestle (I'm guessing) now, and you wouldn't buy Nestle is their prices went up 40 fold to provide a decent living for all their suppliers. It's lose-lose for them.
