POLICE have said there will be more arrests after 50 football hooligans barricaded themselves inside a York pub and threw glasses and bottles at shoppers.

As reported in The Press, the hooligans, many purportedly supporting Hull City FC, blocked the doors of the Lendal Cellars pub on Saturday, ahead of the club’s friendly match with York City at Bootham Crescent.

Riot police had to cordon off part of the city centre before storming into the pub and marching the troublemakers to the train station where they were put on a train to Hull.

Officers have said they expect to make more arrests after studying CCTV footage and collating intelligence gathered on the day.

Superintendent Lisa Winward, who was in charge of the policing for the event, said: “Our priorities for the day were to ensure the safety of the public and that we could maintain a visible policing presence at the match for the 2,400 fans who attended the game.

“The actions that we took successfully ensured the incident was brought to a close as soon as possible and no one was hurt.

“I would like to ask anyone who got caught up in the disorder to come forward so that we can eliminate them from our enquiries.

“Those responsible will be brought to justice and dealt with robustly.”

A spokesman for Hull City FC said they were waiting for more information from the police before taking action.

A spokesman for the FA said they deplored football-related violence, but could only take action against events that took place inside stadiums rather than on the streets. The spokesman also said football-banning orders – which ban troublemakers from attending matches – can only be imposed by the courts.

As a result of Saturday afternoon’s trouble, four people were arrested.

A man aged 18 from Beverley and a youth aged 16 from Hull were both arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A 20-year-old man from York was arrested for using threatening behaviour and given a penalty notice for disorder before being released and a 36-year-old York man was arrested and charged with using threatening behaviour. He will appear before magistrates next Wednesday.

Anyone who has any information about those involved in the disorder is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.
