THE demolition of York’s former Peasholme Centre will be debated tomorrow night.
The opposition Labour group on City of York Council claim the former hostel, in Peasholme Green, was knocked down prematurely, before possible alternative uses had been explored.
The centre was flattened following the move to new premises in Fishergate – but Labour saId the old building could have been given a new community or business use.
The move to Fishergate was originally to make way for the council’s planned move to new headquarters at Hungate, which was shelved.
Coun Brian Watson, who will propose a motion tomorrow condemning the demolition of the building, said: “We appreciate the site is proposed to form part of a larger area for development in the longer term, but until that time the former hostel could have been accommodating any number of different groups, from scouts to schools.”

The only reason it was ever going to be demolished was because it got in the way of Galloways Ivory Towers, and when that went belly up, they still demolished it, spouting some old rubbish, to save face and not appear to be blowing tax payers money AGAIN.
Never really got this. This building was condemned unsuitable for homeless people yet some reckon that makes it ok for Scouts or school children ?!?!?!?!?!

More or less than the new build? Are these not the important questions rather than immature speculation?voiceoreason wrote: Never really got this.
