Selby cabbies’ anger at closure of Millgate

TAXI drivers have reacted with dismay at yet another road closure in Selby.

From today, Millgate is to be closed for five days. A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said the closure had been requested by Morrison Utilities so the comany could connect water supplies to a number of properties.

But Richard Collins, a driver with Station Cars, said the closure would cause yet more problems for cabs and that the general traffic situation in Selby needed addressing.

Mr Collins said: “It’s just a joke. Everything is done at the wrong time. We’ve got the school six-week holiday looming and when it runs over, which it will, it just causes no end of mayhem with traffic. We’ve got a bypass which nobody uses, we get all the wagons coming through the town and there’s just so much congestion.

”It’s just so hard for all the taxi lads, not just those from Station, to get around and then we get shouted at by customers for being late.”

When The Press contacted Morrison Utilities on Friday afternoon, no-one was available for comment.

New Street in Selby was closed for several weeks earlier this year, while motorists using the A19 have been hit with more roadworks.

Traders in the town centre have also had to deal with road closures for the last three years, with the Renaissance Project closures provoking particular anger from businesses.

Just what is this blokes problem? If your job involves driving, roadworks are going to affect you from time to time. If he doesn't like it, why cant he get a different job?

So nobody uses the bypass then and there's too much congestion in Selby. Good job he wasn't a taxi driver 30 years ago when there was no bypass then he would have seen what congestion was. Whenever I have driven through Selby lately its been like a ghost town. I have found the reason Selby's car parks are empty because everyone seems to be parking on the footpaths now, check Brook Street and Doncaster road!!!!!!!!

Yes people park on the new widened footpaths, because if you look around you will not see any enforcement, Selby Council will not instruct its staff to take action, It’s Cllr Crane again, lets upgrade Selby give it new wide boulevards, so the café culture can develop, spend millions on Chinese York stone and Granite to ‘improve’ the market place, then lets put bollards up to stop people using the market place, lets not clean it so it looks, and is, grubby and dirty. lets do up the water front ( again) but don’t put any cash in the pot for maintenance so it looks grubby as well , and as far as North Yorkshire County Council goes- lets help the situation by closing roads in an adhoc way to cause as much disruption as possible. What does the County Cllr for Selby say- absolutely nothing as far as I can see, most people have know idea who he or she is.

There is a rolling 12 month closure of any road in Selby being implemented at the moment. I believe it still has about 6 months to run, so expect more of the same.

The by-pass is well used by the vast majority of traffic, as is proved by the amount of traffic queing at the lights outside my place. Theres never any more than 10 cars waiting, whereas before they would que from the Town Hall all the way down Brook Street and then onto Doncaster Road.

Some lorries do use the town as there route and should not if there is a weight restriction in place- which as myselby says is never policed.

The only queueing traffic now is on Gowthorpe, where the council 'improved' the road layout to create a mini chicane and cause tailbacks through town. The Rennaissance project.........plea
se dont let me start on that one......

Cabbies wouldn't be cabbies if they weren't getting ridiculously angry about stupid trivial things...
.
If a utility company need to close a road then they are allowed to do so, and there is nothing the council can do to stop them.

Traffic in Selby is not that bad. It might not look like the bypass is busy, but it is taking a lot of traffic out of the town. Think back ten years to the length of queues we had down Barlby Road and Doncaster Road every day of the week, and the gridlock we had through the town centre. Yes, there is a bit of congestion now and then, particularly around 5pm on weekdays and on Saturday morning, but you find me a town with a busy centre that doesn't. Unless you want to rip out all the buildings around New Street and Water Hill Lane, you won't be able to free up traffic, because the roads are too narrow.
.
God help Mr Collins if he ever moves to York...
