Calls for Fishergate road safety work not to be axed

YORK’S Green Party leader has called on transport bosses not to let spending cuts delay plans to improve pedestrian safety at a dangerous junction.

Coun Andy D’Agorne urged City of York Council’s city strategy boss, Coun Steve Galloway, to press ahead with work to upgrade the Fishergate gyratory system.

His pleas came after council officers published a report asking Coun Galloway to approve a recommendation to reduce funding for the scheme and suspend any work until “future years”.

Coun D’Agorne said safety improvements should be treated as a priority following the death of pedestrian Lucie Brabyn outside Toto’s Italian restaurant in 2007.

He said: “At the moment this is a blind corner for pedestrians, but the proposed work would change the design of this junction, with a build-out, so pedestrians are in a position to see traffic coming round the corner.

“Fishergate gyratory is a major barrier as well as road safety hazard to people walking or cycling to the city centre, and should be upgraded for safety before the Barbican comes back into operation.”

How much longer have this once great city got to put up with Galloway deciding everything. The man is a dictator, he shoved Waller in the front line so he didn't get the stick over Hungate. Yet we all know he is the one pulling the strings. The sooner he is gone to retirement the better.

there is plenty funding for "cycle " related improvements / routes etc for a very small minority of city users.....

yet pedestrians and drivers who are the majority have to put up with road systems 30 years out of date

total madness - its about time the councils were forced to open up decision making to the resident population prior to announcing the latest hairbrained improvement or lack of scheme ie water end......

Maybe Mr D'Agorne should concentrate his efforts on the safety of the users of Fulford Road since it's 'upgrade'

There is nothing wrong with the Fishergate one-way system, it has been like it is for nearly 40 years.
The accident referred to took place at around 2 o'clock in the morning after the victim had been on a night out, the driver involved was not speeding or under the influence of drink or drugs but was looking to his left for any traffic merging from Paragon Street. Hence he did not see the pedestrian who was stood in the middle of the road.
Building out pavements for either pedestrians, buses or parking bays like the council have done on a lot of city roads merely obstructs the flow of traffic, it does not provide 'safety'.

The interesting thing about that one way system is a few decades ago they changed the merging system outside what's now Toto's italian restaurant. Used to be you had to wait if coming from Castle Mills and join the stream from Barbican Rd when you could. Now you can go straight round and indicate across without having to wait.
However, no-one does that! It's a kind of people power thing, folk just seemed to say, "Nah we've always done it this way and that's how we'll carry on thank you, we don't care about your road markings actually."
.
What's even more interesting is I've seen quite a few drivers doing the same on the stupid new Fulford Rd layout, especially the ones ignoring a good section of the daft bus lane outside Iceland - much to the annoyance of an Arriva bus driver today. The people are speaking, voting with their feet and I say well done to em!
