RECORD entry numbers for livestock have been received for this year’s Great Yorkshire Show.
The event has received the biggest sheep numbers in the show’s history, cattle numbers at their highest for a decade and pig entries topping those of 50 years ago.
Peaking at 1,952, the sheep entries are the biggest livestock section, with 36 breeds and types of sheep competing.
Of the cattle breeds, both British Simmentals and Holsteins have seen a massive boost in entrants and more traditional breeds such as the Galloway and Lincoln red have also made a comeback. The pig section, which includes the British Pig Association’s Pig of the Year final and the Sainsbury’s sponsored Supreme Pig Championships, is also set to be a success.
Entries include 11 new different breeds that have never been entered in the show before, including Oxford Sandy and Black.
The show, at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, runs from July 13 to 15.
