York Asbestos Support group to raise awareness of mesothelioma

CAMPAIGNERS will hand out leaflets at York’s Homebase store in Foss Islands Road tomorrow, about the dangers of asbestos.

The York Asbestos Support group says it wants to use Action Mesothelioma Day to raise awareness of the potential hazards when people carry out renovation or home improvement work.

The group’s chairwoman, Kim Daniells, said: “Many younger people are not aware of the possible presence of asbestos in dwellings and the potential danger of even very low levels of exposure.

“We will also be distributing lapel pins to mark the loss of so many of our family members; friends and colleagues to mesothelioma.”

There is some promising research concerning mesothelioma and the presence of elevated levels of HMGB1 in a sufferers serum.

Asbestos kills cells and the paradox is that cancer cells should not be able to form.

It appears that when asbestos kills cells this is done by inducing a process called ''programmed cell necrosis''.

This releases a molecule called high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1).

HMGB1 begins an inflammatory reaction causing mutagens and factors that encourages the growth of tumours.

The upshot is that by targetting HMGB1 it may be possible to treat mesothelioma and identify it by a simple blood test.

Researchers believe it may be possible to interfere with the inflammatory reaction caused by asbestos and HMGB1to decrease the number of asbestos exposed cancer incidents and reduce the number of tumours in those already affected by mesothelioma.

Interesting stuff T. Scaife!
Research into the mechanisms of disease often raises the possibility of seemingly novel treatments for illnesses, and I hope this avenue leads to sucess.
