A STUDENT is to walk barefoot 100 miles along the Yorkshire coast to raise money for charity.

Charli Martin, a second-year student at the University of York, hopes to raise £500 for UK based suicide awareness and prevention charity Papyrus.

She hopes to complete the trek from Bridlington to Loftus in four days. Charli, 20, said: “I’ll be with my friends Katie Toghill and Laura Holland, walking on roads and hopefully beaches. Both of them will be wearing shoes. Katie’s hoping to do the whole walk, and Laura’s hoping to do 50 miles of it.”

Last year Charli raised £393 by spending a week walking everywhere barefoot.

“I decided to spend a week in bare feet because it was something different, and got people talking to me, which brought more attention to Papyrus,” she said. The UK charity gives support to those dealing with suicide or depression, and is particularly important to Charli.

“My great uncle killed himself, and I’ve had friends who have struggled with depression, so it is something that has been part of my life,” said Charli, who is studying French and German Linguistics.
